What is Therme Bucharest?
Therme Bucharest is not just any spa. It is Europe’s largest wellness centre that blends nature and technology to offer experiences that go way beyond the traditional spa day.
Since opening in Bucharest, it has become a viral sensation due to its jaw-dropping tropical pools and affordable prices. More locations are planned, with work to build Therme Manchester and Therme Ontario already underway.
The flagship Romanian facility is located just 10 minutes from Otopeni Airport and about 30 minutes from Bucharest city centre. With direct flights to the capital often coming in cheaper than a UK spa visit, it’s easy to see why so many people are swapping local retreats for jetting off to Therme.
Therme Zones Explained
When you first step inside Therme, it’s a little overwhelming, but in a good way. It’s like a slightly futuristic tropical resort, with warm pools and towering palm trees.
The spa is divided into three main zones – Palm Zone, Elysium Zone, and Galazy Zone – with each designed to offer something a little different.
Here’s a quick guide to help you pick the best part for your own visit.
The Palm Zone – For Tropical Relaxation
If it’s pure relaxation you’re wanting, head straight to the Palm Zone.
This area serves as a tranquil, adults-only area. It genuinely feels like you’ve landed on a tropical island. Under a giant glass domed roof, you’ll find crystal-clear thermal pools surrounded by over 1,500 lush palm trees. I loved how the sunlight streams through the roof, making everything look warm and bright.
The Palm Zone is also where you’ll also find indoor and outdoor pools, mineral pools, hydromassage beds, aqua aerobic classes, and swim-up cocktail bars. Relaxing in the warm waters while sipping a drink was definitely one of the highlights of my trip.
Be warned that this is still the most popular zone. I visited on a weekday morning and the loungers were already completely full within an hour of opening.
Top Tip: Get there early and head straight for a sunbed. You can leave your towels or robes to reserve it. Ideally, put something down that’s recognisably your own.
The Elysium Zone – For Wellness and Saunas
For a more exclusive, grown-up experience, be sure to visit Therme’s Elysium Zone.
This adults-only area is focused entirely on wellness, featuring various themed saunas and a luxurious indoor pool. My personal favourite was the Alhambra Sauna, but the Hollywood sauna is also a must-visit for its unique atmosphere. You can also enjoy holistic showers and a beautiful fine dining restaurant overlooking the water.
The saunas are genuinely incredible, and I loved trying the various rituals, where sauna masters create intense heat waves using essential oils. It felt super energising and was unlike anything I had experienced in UK spas.
Top Tip: If you love saunas and quiet spaces, the Elysium Zone is worth the small upgrade fee.
The Galaxy Zone – For Family Fun and Thrilling Water Slides
If you’re visiting with kids (or you are just a big kid at heart!), the Galaxy Zone is the place for you.
This section is all about fun and is home to Romania’s largest indoor slide complex, featuring 16 colourful water slides. There’s also a huge wave pool, thermal pools for families, and a lazy river to float around.
While I did not spend loads of time in this area, it’s clear why the Galaxy Zone makes Therme one of the best family-friendly spas in Bucharest.
Top Tip: This zone gets very busy during weekends and school holidays. If you prefer a quieter vibe, definitely stick to the Palm and Elysium zones.
Outdoor Areas – Pools, Hammocks, and Sunbathing
Beyond the main domes, the outdoor areas are also stunning and perfect for summer visits.
The centre has beautifully landscaped gardens, complete with sunbathing spots, hammocks, and thermal outdoor pools. I visited last summer and loved looking at the peaceful water features and planted gardens around the Feng Shui Park and Pangea Park.
Each summer, the Thermes of Sand becomes Europe’s largest urban beach with over 30,000 square metres of sandy beach, pools, and lounges. It really is a vibe!
Top Tip: Don’t skip the outdoor pools, even in cooler weather, as the water is so warm it feels like a giant hot tub.
Sauna Experiences and Rituals
Another standout feature of the facilities are the Aufguss rituals that take place at some of the themed saunas.
These are special ceremonies where a sauna master sweeps hot air and essential oils around the room using towels and rhythmic movements. This was definitely an intense experience of heat and detoxing.
I tried a few different rituals during my visit, and each one felt unique. My favourite was the herbal scrub sauna experience, which left my skin feeling incredibly smooth and soft. Best of all, these rituals are included for free with your ticket.
Top Tip: Make sure you check the day’s rituals schedule and arrive at least 10 to 15 minutes beforehand to get a seat, as standing is not allowed.
Thermal Pools and Wellness Attractions
Across the spa, you’ll find a variety of smaller pools and wellness zones, including:
- Mineral pools: Designed to boost health and well-being, including selenium, zinc, and lithium options.
- Infrared light therapy beds: Ideal for deep muscle relaxation. I could have lazed under those lovely warm lamps all day!
- Hydromassage beds: One of the few paid extras at Therme, but they are very affordable and well worth experiencing.
- Calla showers: A mist and rainwater experience – a refreshing cool-down after time in the sauna!
- Himalayan salt sauna: Grab a cosy cushion and relax while over 80 minerals in the composition of the walls work their magic.
I actually lost count of how many pools and saunas I dipped into during the day. Everywhere you turn, there’s something new to discover.
Top Tip: With the mineral pools, if you can’t get a seat straight away, wait in the centre until one becomes available. It usually only takes a minute or so.
Therme Tickets, Deals & Discounts
One of the best parts about visiting Therme in Bucharest is just how affordable the entry prices are compared to typical UK spa days.
There are several different ticket options, depending on which zones you want to access, when, and how long you plan to stay:
Here’s a full breakdown of the tickets available (price is per adult).

Currency ConverterTop Tip: If there are only 3-hour passes available, don’t worry. You can buy this and stay as long as you like – you’ll simply be charged the difference when you leave.
Personally, I opted for the full day pass for the Elysium Zone, which provided access to all three areas. I ended up spending 13 hours at the spa, so it was worth every penny!
Deals and Discounts
If you can be flexible with your timings, it’s possible to save money. Here are a few ways to lower your ticket price:
- Early or late entry: Arrive before 11:30am on weekdays to enjoy discounted 3.5-hour sessions, or grab cheaper evening sessions Mondays to Thursdays.
- Off peak deals: Visit Monday to Thursday in term time for the cheapest off-peak prices
- Zen points: Register for myTherme to receive Zen points, which open up exclusive offers and perks.
- Partner hotels: Some partner hotels offer combined stay and spa deals, or perks including free transport
- Get Your Guide packages: This bundle includes your entrance ticket plus fast and convenient transport from Bucharest city. It’s a fantastic option if you have an early start and want to avoid navigating local taxis or buses. Check availability for this package here.
Top Tip: Book tickets online in advance. Queues can become quite long during weekends and school holidays, and once the spa reaches capacity, it operates a one-in, one-out rule. Booking ahead guarantees your spot and prevents stress upon arrival. You can purchase tickets up to 2 months in advance via the mobile app or 1 month in advance through the official website.
Therme Food and Drink Options
A full day lounging around at Therme can surprisingly work up your appetite. Luckily, the spa has eight places to eat and drink dotted throughout the venue, ranging from swim-up bars to sit-down restaurants.
For food, you’ll find:
- Buffet-style eateries: Quick and easy for families.
- Full-service restaurants: Ideal if you want a proper sit-down meal.
- Snack bars: Perfect for grabbing coffee, ice cream, or light bites.
Menus are quite varied, offering everything from burgers and pizzas to healthier salads and smoothies. I was really impressed by the options and quality. It’s definitely a step up from the limp sandwiches and stale scones I’ve previously had at some UK spas.
My Favourite Restaurants: Mango Tree and Humboldt
During my visit, I decided to try the Mango Tree restaurant located in the exclusive Elysium Zone for our evening meal, and I’m so glad we did. They serve genuinely delicious fusion food with a Thai twist in a peaceful setting, with an outdoor terrace offering beautiful sunset views. I had a gorgeous mushroom risotto and an ice-cold cocktail, which felt like a real treat after a busy day of sauna-hopping.
If you’re looking for a different atmosphere, the Humboldt restaurant is another fantastic dining option within the complex. It offers a diverse menu that caters to various tastes, making it a reliable choice when you need to refuel.
Top Tip: If you plan to eat at a sit-down restaurant, get there early or go later. Queues build up quickly after midday, especially at weekends. It’s not possible to book in advance.
Drinks and Bars
There are also several swim-up bars inside The Palm and Galaxy areas, offering cocktails, beer, and soft drinks that you can enjoy without leaving the water. Each swim-up bar is a popular spot to socialise.
Top Tip: Be aware that during busy periods, queues at the swim-up bar can get quite long and visitors are not always served in order. So, prepare to be politely assertive.
The Honest Truth About Dining at Therme
While the food and drinks were great, I’ll be honest, the service can be a bit slow when the venue is crowded. Try to plan your mealtimes around the busiest periods, or be prepared for a longer wait.
What should I bring for my visit?
You’ll need a swimming costume or trunks. It’s also important to note that Therme has made flip-flops mandatory for indoor use, so you should pack two pairs: one for the outdoor areas and a clean, separate pair for wearing inside.
Therme offers the option of renting robes, towels and flip-flops for an additional charge, which costs about 31 Lei for a towel, 35 Lei for flip-flops, and 39 Lei for a robe for the day.
In summer, I recommend renting a towel to save space in your hand luggage (or bring a compact travel version, like my favourite by Beach Baby London) and bring a light, thin robe from home. This allows you to cover up comfortably without overheating, and you’ll have a personal item to leave on your sunbed to claim your space. Make sure you also pack sunscreen or SPF for sunny days, along with a hat and sunglasses if you plan on relaxing in the sun.
Top Tip: Leave the reusable water bottle or drinks container at home, as these aren’t allowed inside Therme.
I also used this waterproof bag to carry my belongings between areas. There are hooks around the pools for hanging bags and robes.
Other Useful Bucharest Spa Tips
Wristband Technology – Seamless & Cashless
One feature I really loved during my visit was the clever electronic wristband provided to Therme guests.
This acts as your locker system key, area access pass, and digital wallet all in one. Just tap as required, and at the end of your visit, scan your electronic wristband at the exit to see your balance and pay by card. Note: spending limits are in place, so you may need to settle your balance at one of the touch screen machines located throughout the facility before you can continue spending.
This system definitely made the day easier without worrying about carrying Romanian Leu or losing a physical token. That’s a huge relief for someone like me, who’s prone to misplacing things (thanks ADHD and peri-menopause!).
Book Treatments in Advance
This is one key thing I wish I had known before visiting. You can’t pre-book spa treatments. You must book them when you arrive, and popular slots often sell out almost immediately.
When I arrived at around 9:30 am, all the massage slots were already gone. If specific treatments are important to you, make sure to get to the spa early and head straight to the treatment desk to secure your booking.
Where to Stay Near Therme
Although a visit to Therme can be done as an extreme day trip from some UK airports, I’d recommend staying at least one night to make the most of your spa experience while also spending time exploring Bucharest itself. After a long day of relaxation, you’ll definitely want a comfortable place to stay.
The good news is that there are plenty of hotels and apartments nearby, ranging from convenient airport stays to properties in the heart of the city. Whether you’re planning a weekend break or a longer Romania itinerary, there’s something to suit every budget and style.
My Stay: Uni88 Apartments
During my own visit, I stayed at Uni88 Apartments with two friends, and I honestly couldn’t recommend it more.
It was clean, comfortable and very affordable, providing everything we needed for a short city break. The apartment featured modern touches and good Wi-Fi, serving as a quiet escape after the busy spa. The location was also ideal, as it was close enough to reach Therme Bucharest in under 15 minutes by taxi, and just a short drive into the centre of Bucharest as well.
Top Tip: If you’re travelling in a group, apartments like Uni88 are perfect because they offer more space, better value, and the freedom to make your own breakfast before a spa day.
Hotels Near Otopeni Airport
If you want to stay as close as possible to Therme Bucharest, check out these airport hotels, situated just 10 minutes away:
- Vienna House Easy Airport Bucharest: 4-star comfort that is very convenient for travellers.
- Hilton Garden Inn Otopeni: Offers a sleek design and a handy shuttle service.
- Hotel Aviator Boutique: A smaller boutique option that is ideal for couples or solo travellers.
These options are perfect if you are flying in late or heading to Therme Bucharest straight from arrivals.
Hotels in Bucharest City
If you prefer to base yourself in the bustling Bucharest city centre and travel to the spa for the day, these hotels are stylish and well located:
- Radisson Blu Hotel: A luxury pick that features a pool and a spa of its own.
- Moxy Bucharest Old Town: A fun, youthful and budget-friendly choice.
- InterContinental Athénée Palace: A 5-star classic with beautiful views and heritage charm.
From the city, it’s about a 30-minute drive to the spa – easy enough for a relaxing day trip.

Transport to Therme
Therme Bucharest is conveniently located just 5 km from Henri Coandă International Airport, also known as Otopeni Airport, making it an ideal stop for travellers arriving or departing from the city. It’s also about 20 km north of the Bucharest city centre, and is easily accessible via various transport options.
Buses
Therme Bucharest no longer offers a free shuttle bus service, but the STB 442 bus departs from Piața Presei Libere and picks up at Otopeni Airport before arriving at the spa. Buses run daily, with a frequency of every 20 to 30 minutes. The ride costs 3 Lei and takes about 40 minutes. Tickets can be purchased via the STB app or at local kiosks.
Taxis
For a more direct route, Uber or Bolt services are available from Bucharest city to the spa. The journey takes around 30 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic, and costs approximately 80 to 120 Lei. This option is particularly convenient for groups or those carrying luggage.
Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber and Bolt are also readily available at the airport, and journeys are often cheaper than in the UK. A ride from the airport to Therme typically costs between 26 and 46 Lei and takes around 10 to 15 minutes, depending on traffic.
Top Tip: Avoid standard, unmetered taxis, always pay via the app only, and don’t accept being dropped anywhere other than at your designated destination.

Is Therme Bucharest Worth Visiting?
This is probably the question most people are Googling, and I was asking it myself before I booked.
So here is my honest, no-fluff answer: Yes, but it depends on your expectations.
If you’re looking for a truly tranquil, exclusive experience, then Therme is not the place for you. But if you go expecting a busy but fun day with some relaxing elements, then I think you’ll really enjoy your visit.
What I Loved
- Incredible value
- Variety of facilities and experiences
- Easy to reach
- Sauna rituals
- Perfect for groups, couples and families
What Didn’t Quite Work
- It can feel less like a luxury spa and more like a noisy wellness theme park.
- It gets very busy during Romanian school holidays, weekends and evenings.
- Treatments can’t be booked in advance and sell out fast on opening
- Food and drink service is slow at peak times. You can’t take your own water bottle either, so expect to queue for drinks.
Bucharest Spa Review: FAQs About Visiting Therme
How do you get to Therme?
You can take the free shuttle bus from Piața Romană, use the STB 442 public bus from the airport or city centre, or simply book an Uber or Bolt via the mobile app.
Do I really need to book in advance?
Some days it’s not strictly essential, but I would highly recommend booking tickets online as soon as possible, especially for weekends or holidays. Doing this guarantees entry, and avoids longer delays on arrival.
Should I bring or rent a towel or robe?
Robes are optional, but are handy for moving between different areas and are needed for dining in the restaurants. Renting robes and towels is possible for an extra fee, and frees up space in your luggage. However, bringing your own is cheaper and makes them easier to identify as your own. I use a micro-fibre towel as it’s compact and quick drying. In summer, I’d recommend bringing a lighter robe, as the spa’s own towelling robes are hot and heavy!
My teen isn’t yet 14, should I risk booking all zones?
No. The age restriction is strictly enforced, and proof of ID is checked on arrival. Therme’s Galaxy Zone is very family-friendly and specifically designed for families, featuring water slides, a large wave pool, and various splash zones. Even without access to the Palm and Elysium Zones, there’s still plenty of space for under-14s to enjoy.
What’s the best time to visit Therme?
Weekdays and early mornings are the best times to visit, and it’s cheaper then. If you prefer a quieter, more peaceful experience, try to avoid Romanian school holidays, Friday evenings, and weekends.
Can I take photos at Therme?
I totally get the desire to capture those Instagram-worthy photos to show your friends back home. However, phones and cameras are not permitted inside the pools or saunas (unless you have been granted special permission), and staff monitor this closely. You’re welcome to take photos poolside in both indoor and outdoor areas, including the Sands of Therme. Just be considerate of others who may be waiting to get a photo as well.
Should I bring cash or use card?
Therme is actually cashless, with your electronic wristband operating the locker system, acting as payment for food and drink, and providing access to your allocated zones. So there’s no need to carry a key, cash or card around the facility. Just settle your balance when you leave (or earlier if you hit the spending limit).
Bucharest Spa Review – The Verdict
If you’re visiting Romania and want a fun, affordable, and totally unique day out, a trip to Therme is 100 per cent worth it. This comprehensive review highlights why it remains a top choice for travellers, though you should plan your timing carefully. A midweek visit during school term time is best. Just make sure you check the Romanian and European school holidays, as well as those in the UK, to help manage your expectations around the crowds.
Would I go back? Yes! Definitely! But I recommend flying out the day before and arriving super early to secure a treatment booking, reserve a sun lounger, and really make the most of your time at Therme Bucharest. Ultimately, if you are looking for a relaxing escape, I hope this post has helped you plan the perfect visit.
