Hand Luggage Rules Explained, Real Examples for EasyJet, Ryanair, Wizz Air, and BA
Nothing ruins the smug joy of a bargain flight like being told your bag is โtoo bigโ when youโre already at the gate, sweating, holding a coffee, and pretending youโre fine.
If youโre a part time traveller squeezing in short trips while travelling around a full time job, hand luggage rules matter more than ever. One wrong backpack and suddenly your cheap weekend break costs the same as a monthly rail pass.
I fly regularly with these four major UK budget airlines, so I know from experience what will get on board (and fit under the seat in front of you) without an eyelash being batted, and what won’t.
This guide breaks down what hand luggage you can actually take on easyJet, Ryanair, Wizz Air, and British Airways in 2026, with real packing examples that make sense in real life. Plus a handy carry-on size checker tool to banish the uncertainty.
The bit airlines donโt shout about: โfreeโ usually means โunder-seatโ
Most budget airlines now treat โhand luggageโ as one item that fits under the seat in front of you.
That means no bonus handbag, no separate laptop case, no โbut itโs just my snack bagโ. If it doesnโt fit inside the one allowed bag, youโre taking a risk.
British Airways is the exception here, because they usually allow two cabin items on most fares (a cabin bag plus a personal item). On a packed flight, even BA can ask to check your larger cabin bag at the gate, but thatโs often done without charge.
If you want a wider industry comparison, this Which article has a solid round-up of cabin allowances across the big names.
Hand luggage rules (2026): easyJet vs Ryanair vs Wizz Air vs BA
Rules can change, so always check your booking confirmation before you fly, especially if you bought add-ons.
Hereโs the typical allowance structure as of spring 2026.
| Airline | Free bag included | Size (free bag) | Overhead cabin bag (when allowed) | Overhead size and weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| easyJet | 1 under-seat bag | 45 ร 36 ร 20 cm | Paid add-on, easyJet Plus, or certain seats | 56 ร 45 ร 25 cm, up to 15 kg |
| Ryanair | 1 under-seat bag | 40 ร 30 ร 20 cm | โPriority & 2 Cabin Bagsโ | 55 ร 40 ร 20 cm, 10 kg |
| Wizz Air | 1 under-seat bag | 40 ร 30 ร 20 cm | WIZZ Priority (or bundle) | 55 ร 40 ร 23 cm, 10 kg |
| British Airways | 1 personal item + 1 cabin bag (most fares) | 40 ร 30 ร 15 cm (personal item) | Included | 56 ร 45 ร 25 cm, up to 23 kg |
One reason people get caught out is that the โfreeโ bag sizes are all slightly different. A backpack that slides onto an Ryanair flight should now also fit with Wizz thanks to a recent Ryanair sizing change. EasyJet’s under-seat allowance is more generous on paper, but still heavily enforced at busy gates.
Carry-on confusion is common enough that itโs made headlines, including this BBC explainer on why passengers keep getting stung.
Real examples: what fits under the seat (and what doesnโt)
Letโs make this practical, because centimetres donโt mean much when youโre trying to pack at 11pm on a Thursday.
easyJet (45 ร 36 ร 20 cm under-seat)
This is one of the roomier under-seat allowances, so a small, squishy cabin backpack works well. Use a compression cube to really optimise the space.
A realistic 3-day city break pack:
- 2 outfits plus one worn
- Lightweight jumper
- Pyjamas or a big T-shirt
- Toiletries in one liquids bag, like this travel bottle set
- Trainers worn, flat shoes packed
I once tried to bring a separate crossbody bag for my passport and headphones. Gate staff were not impressed and made me squash it into my under-seat bag. Now I pack my Pacsafe crossbody inside my main bag and only take it out after boarding.
Ryanair (40 ร 30 ร 20 cm under-seat)
Ryanairโs free bag is still basically โlarge shoebox with strapsโ, even after the recent update to its size allowance. The winning move is a slim backpack that doesnโt stick out.
What fits for a weekend:
- 2 tops, 1 jeans, 1 โniceโ outfit that doesnโt crease
- Underwear and socks rolled tight
- Chargers and a power bank (this Anker two-in-one version goes with me everywhere)
- A sandwich that you absolutely could have bought airside but refused on principle
If you want the classic wheelie case overhead, youโll usually need Priority. Otherwise, that trolley bag at the gate can become a very expensive personality test. And if it sticks out of their sizer by even a single millimetre, you’ll have the card machine thrust in front of you faster than you can say “kerching!”.
Wizz Air (40 ร 30 ร 20 cm under-seat)
Wizz sizing is the same as Ryanair, but it’s still tight.
A good fit is a structured backpack that holds shape without bulging. If it bulges, it suddenly looks โbiggerโ, and you donโt want your bag auditioning for attention.
Pack like this:
- Packing cube for clothes (it stops the bag ballooning)
- Toiletries kept minimal (travel sizes or solids)
- One layer for the plane (hoodie or denim jacket)
British Airways (usually 2 cabin items)
BA is the โbring your stuffโ friend of the group.
A solid setup for a 2 to 4-day trip:
- Cabin wheelie case for clothes
- Small backpack or handbag for tech, liquids, meds, and snacks
The key is not weight, itโs lift. A 23 kg cabin bag sounds generous, but if you canโt hoist it into the overhead locker without taking out a bystander, youโll have a bad time.
How to avoid gate-fee drama (without packing like a monk)
You donโt need to own one pair of pants and a travel toothbrush to follow hand luggage rules. You just need a system.
- Choose a soft bag for under-seat travel. Hard cases donโt squish, and gate sizers donโt care about your feelings. This Cabin Max bag is my go-to under-seat bag for travel on all four airlines I’ve mentioned.
- Keep the bagโs โshapeโ slim. A fully packed front pocket can turn a perfect-size backpack into a lumpy overachiever.
- Wear the bulky stuff. Coat, boots, thick jumper, and another jumper tied round your waist if needed. You can take layers off once youโre on board.

When itโs worth paying for an overhead cabin bag
For short trips, I try to stay under-seat only. Itโs faster off the plane, easier on public transport, and stops me packing โjust in caseโ outfits.
Iโll occasionally pay for an overhead bag when Iโm travelling with work kit (laptop, camera, or anything awkward), itโs winter and the clothes are bulky, or Iโm doing a longer trip where laundry isnโt happening.
Saying that, last spring I managed a 7-day tour of Scandinavia on only an under-seat-size bag. So it can be done!
If youโre trying to keep the whole trip cheap, baggage fees are often the first leak in the budget. These tips on timing and flexibility to find cheaper flights can help balance it out.
Exceptions to hand luggage restrictions
There are some instances when you are allowed to bring additional hand luggage without extra charge.
These examples are common across different airlines, but the limits and process may differ between them so always check this in advance.
- All passengers are allowed one duty-free shopping bag, in addition to their allotted hand luggage allowance. I often use this for a Boots click and collect order and grab my toiletries order after security and before boarding.
- Medical equipment baggage is usually allowed to be carried separately without charge, but may require advance consent from the airline and proof such as a doctor’s letter. Contact the airline’s special assistance team for advice.
- Handheld items are usually allowed in addition to your bag. This can include (but isn’t limited to) items such as an umbrella, overcoat, crutches, walking stick, headphones, or a book. Neck pillows are also allowed, and I quite often stuff mine before with extra clothing!
My recommended under-seat bag for UK airlines
The under-seat-size bag I use, and recommend to everyone, is this fabulous Cabin Max Manhattan backpack. It comes in various sizes, but the 40 x 30 x 20cm version will keep you in line with easyJet, Ryanair and Wizz size restrictions.
It features a front organiser pocket, internal zipped compartment, and padded tech section for laptops up to 13″, and the padded straps make it so comfortable to carry.
I know so many people who have this bag, or a version of it, and I’ve never heard a single complaint yet. Order it now with Amazon Prime, and you can have it in your hands by tomorrow!

FAQs about hand luggage rules
Here are the questions I get asked the most about UK airline hand luggage requirements, and the expert advice I always give.
Can I take a handbag as well as my under-seat bag on Ryanair, Wizz Air, or easyJet?
Usually no, not unless it fits inside your one allowed under-seat bag. If you carry it separately, youโre relying on either managing to successfully hide it or staff discretion.
What happens if my bag is slightly too big?
Sometimes youโll get waved through (usually if the flight is delayed and the gate staff are keen to complete boarding quickly). Sometimes youโll get measured. If it doesnโt fit the sizer, you can be charged and the bag may go in the hold.
Do wheels and handles count in the size?
Yes. Airlines measure the full external size, including wheels, handles, and any rigid bits that stick out. Also, don’t rely on the advertised measurements, measure it yourself to be absolutely sure it will fit.
Is British Airways stricter than the budget airlines?
BA tends to be more generous with cabin allowance, but busy flights can mean gate-checking larger cabin bags. Keep essentials in your personal item just in case.
Whatโs the easiest bag style for budget airlines?
A cabin backpack with a flat profile is the least stressful. Avoid deep hiking packs and anything with stiff frames that wonโt compress. I always recommend this Cabin Max backpack, as it fits all airlines and should still fit even if you over-stuff it a little.
Are there any exceptions to hand luggage rules?
Not many, but often one bag of duty free shopping is permitted, plus medical equipment if discussed with the airline in advance. Handheld items being carried, such as a coat, umbrella, headphones or a book also aren’t counted.
Hand luggage rules arenโt hard, theyโre just annoyingly specific. Pick the right bag once, pack with intention, and youโll stop paying โsurpriseโ fees that cost more than your return flight. Because no-one has the time or patience for that when you’re squeezing in quick trips between office days.
Next time you book a quick getaway, ask yourself one thing: do you want more space in your bag, or more money for the trip? Because you can guarantee I’d much rather have an Aperol Spritz in my hand than a larger bag, every single time, with no regret!
