Group Trip Spotlight: Marrakech

My group trip report from our recent weekend in Morocco!

Wow wow wow! What an absolutely amazing, exhausting, but utterly perfect weekend spent with 35 EDTers visiting another continent. Another outstanding group trip organised by the brilliant Christopher, with myself and King Luke supporting. ๐Ÿฅฐ

We flew from Manchester and landed into Marrakech not long after midday, before grabbing cash from the ATMs and boarding our pre-arranged transfers into the city, then connecting straight onto transport for our first dayโ€™s activities. ๐ŸšŒ

We headed for Agafay, stopping for tea and a demonstration at the Argan Oil Womenโ€™s Cooperative on the way, where we saw the traditional method of hand grinding this nut into food pastes and cosmetics. ๐ŸŒฐ

Then it was onto the desert, and first up, quad biking! This was lots of fun, and felt very tame and safe. We followed that up with a short camel ride, and despite being given the naughty camel who initially refused to cooperate, he was as good as gold on the walk. The guides took some fantastic photos too. ๐Ÿ“ธ

We were then taken to the relaxation area for a pool dip and drinks, which was so refreshing. And we even got to experience a sand storm blowing over. Our evening continued with a Moroccan tagine dinner, followed by dancing and a breathtaking fire show. We arrived back at our hotel (the stunning Palais Moulay) exhausted but happy, and fell into bed just before midnight. ๐Ÿ˜ด

Sleep was short-lived, with a 3.30am alarm set for our bucket-list experience – a sunrise hot air balloon ride. This was just incredible, I literally have no words so Iโ€™ll let the photos do the talking. It felt super safe though, and so smooth, it barely felt like youโ€™d left the ground. And watching the sun rise from behind the Atlas Mountains surrounded by hot air balloons and friends was just magical. Iโ€™ll never forget it. Back on the ground we were served a breakfast of pancakes, fruit and green tea, before heading back to Marrakech. ๐ŸŽˆ

After a quick pit stop for refreshments and souvenirs, our next transfer collected us and we travelled to the Ourika Valley for what wasnโ€™t meant to be a hike, but was what I can only describe as, well, a hike. ๐Ÿคฃ Most of the group made it to the first of the seven waterfalls, I however decided that a combination of slippy sandals on wet rocks, feeling dizzy from tiredness and the crowds was probably a recipe for disaster, so I hung back for a nice sit and chat with another group member in the cool shade. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

We followed this with drinks and a delicious three-course Moroccan lunch sitting by the river. I had the salad, minced meat tagine and chocolate mousse, which was so good! And some more mint tea. ๐Ÿƒโ˜•๏ธ

We headed back to Marrakech a little earlier than originally planned to give us time to explore and shop in the souks, see the main square, and grab drinks and desserts at a lovely rooftop bar. It was the perfect end to the weekend (we wonโ€™t talk about the 1-hour flight delay, waiting for the police to board the plane on arrival, and finally getting home to bed at 5am for another 3 hours sleep before work). ๐Ÿคฃ

This trip isnโ€™t for the feint-hearted. It is physically demanding, mentally exhausting and completely non-stop. If you need a minimum 7 hours of sleep or canโ€™t deal with 43 degrees heat or a lot of minibus/coach travel, then it probably isnโ€™t for you. But if you can cope with all that, then OMG is it worth it. We had the best weekend ticking off bucket-list experiences and making more new travel friends. Sleep is overrated anyway, right?! ๐Ÿ˜…

The most incredible bucket list trip with so many unforgettable highlights with such a lovely group of people.
Would I go again? In a heartbeat.
What I love about these trips is the chance to experience something I would have never booked and done myself due to fear and self doubt. Travelling solo can be daunting as it is never mind chucking a few fears in there, but if you’re thinking about a group trip and are unsure, do it!
Thank you toย Christopherย for organising such an amazing opportunity and the other mods Natalie and King Luke.

Thank you so much to Christopher (and Natalie) for organising our Albanian adventure. It was great to not be the organiser and just sit back pay for things and go with the flow, such a refreshing change. I’ve already signed up for Marrakesh and some of us are exploring 4 countries in 4 days together, so this wonโ€™t be the last adventure we have. Thank you EDT for arranging, hosting and bringing us all together.

I need to thank Christopher Mulholland. Without his planning and guidance, there is no way I could have seen and done everything we did. He created a great day for everyone and if you see another group trip in future, I recommend anyone to go for it. I really enjoyed getting to know some like minded people. Looking forward to the next group trip!

I just wanted to say thank you for including me on your life-changing Marrkech trip. A few years ago I had a diagnosis that turned my life upside down and left me with no confidence in myself. Thankfully I’ve been well for over a year now, so when I saw this trip pop up, I thought “f*** it, what have I got to lose?”.
What I gained was so much more than I ever expected. I came home with confidence, a “go me” attitude, and memories I’ll never forget. Thank you for helping me find that again.

  • I didnโ€™t know what to expect, and I was very nervous about being around so many strangers. You werenโ€™t wrong when you said โ€œwe will start the day as strangers, and end it as friendsโ€. I made some lifetime friends on that trip, I could never have done it without you. It has changed my life seeing scenes I have never seen before. You really have started something special and have helped me get through a very difficult time in life.

It all started with a 3am wake-up call to meet a group of strangers at Gatwickโ€ฆ but by the end of the day, those strangers felt like friends. Massive thanks to Michael Cracknell and team for putting together such a memorable trip. Iโ€™m already looking forward to the next one!

  • Que Swiss cheese moment, but wanted to thank you. Iโ€™ve got a lot going on at the minute and this weekend was the perfect escape from it all for a little while. The perfect distraction. Switzerland is utterly beautiful just as I knew it would be. Thanks to you Iโ€™ve seen countries, cities and views I never in a million years would of thought Iโ€™d see, met some lovely people along the way and overcome my fear of flying (literally 15 years of it). Flown at night, in storms, and because of the group Iโ€™ve come to utterly love it now. I really enjoyed your company, and hope one day I can pop along to another group trip.

Thank you to Michael Cracknell and to everyone on the great Switzerland group trip yesterday. I think itโ€™s fair to say that youโ€™ve inspired many of us to visit the country again and again but showing us some amazing sights and how user-friendly the travel is with the trains etc. Met some wonderful people and saw some beautiful sights (once the fog lifted!). Hi everyone. Just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone on the Athens group EDT yesterday for making it such a brilliant day. The sights were stunning but the company was outstanding ๐ŸคฉWe both had a great day yesterday and very surreal being in work today with people saying โ€œso you popped to Greece with a bunch of strangers for the day?โ€ Like itโ€™s not a normal thing to do?
