Group Trip Spotlight: Marrakech
My group trip report from our recent weekend in Morocco!
Wow wow wow! What an absolutely amazing, exhausting, but utterly perfect weekend spent with 35 EDTers visiting another continent. Another outstanding group trip organised by the brilliant Christopher, with myself and King Luke supporting. ![]()
We flew from Manchester and landed into Marrakech not long after midday, before grabbing cash from the ATMs and boarding our pre-arranged transfers into the city, then connecting straight onto transport for our first dayโs activities. ![]()
We headed for Agafay, stopping for tea and a demonstration at the Argan Oil Womenโs Cooperative on the way, where we saw the traditional method of hand grinding this nut into food pastes and cosmetics. ![]()
Then it was onto the desert, and first up, quad biking! This was lots of fun, and felt very tame and safe. We followed that up with a short camel ride, and despite being given the naughty camel who initially refused to cooperate, he was as good as gold on the walk. The guides took some fantastic photos too. ![]()
We were then taken to the relaxation area for a pool dip and drinks, which was so refreshing. And we even got to experience a sand storm blowing over. Our evening continued with a Moroccan tagine dinner, followed by dancing and a breathtaking fire show. We arrived back at our hotel (the stunning Palais Moulay) exhausted but happy, and fell into bed just before midnight. ![]()
Sleep was short-lived, with a 3.30am alarm set for our bucket-list experience – a sunrise hot air balloon ride. This was just incredible, I literally have no words so Iโll let the photos do the talking. It felt super safe though, and so smooth, it barely felt like youโd left the ground. And watching the sun rise from behind the Atlas Mountains surrounded by hot air balloons and friends was just magical. Iโll never forget it. Back on the ground we were served a breakfast of pancakes, fruit and green tea, before heading back to Marrakech. ![]()
After a quick pit stop for refreshments and souvenirs, our next transfer collected us and we travelled to the Ourika Valley for what wasnโt meant to be a hike, but was what I can only describe as, well, a hike.
Most of the group made it to the first of the seven waterfalls, I however decided that a combination of slippy sandals on wet rocks, feeling dizzy from tiredness and the crowds was probably a recipe for disaster, so I hung back for a nice sit and chat with another group member in the cool shade. ![]()
We followed this with drinks and a delicious three-course Moroccan lunch sitting by the river. I had the salad, minced meat tagine and chocolate mousse, which was so good! And some more mint tea. ![]()

We headed back to Marrakech a little earlier than originally planned to give us time to explore and shop in the souks, see the main square, and grab drinks and desserts at a lovely rooftop bar. It was the perfect end to the weekend (we wonโt talk about the 1-hour flight delay, waiting for the police to board the plane on arrival, and finally getting home to bed at 5am for another 3 hours sleep before work). ![]()
This trip isnโt for the feint-hearted. It is physically demanding, mentally exhausting and completely non-stop. If you need a minimum 7 hours of sleep or canโt deal with 43 degrees heat or a lot of minibus/coach travel, then it probably isnโt for you. But if you can cope with all that, then OMG is it worth it. We had the best weekend ticking off bucket-list experiences and making more new travel friends. Sleep is overrated anyway, right?! ![]()
