5 Long Weekend Getaways in Europe, Book, No Overwhelm!
Ever found yourself spending hours planning a trip, only to give up and stay home? I definitely have. I just got too overwhelmed by choice.
Let’s make it simple. These long weekend getaways in Europe are ideal for last-minute adventurers looking to squeeze magic into just a few days.
Dreaming of river cruises under city lights, wine tastings in colourful old towns or pastel fairy tales? I got you! This guide to the best European cities for a long weekend has something for every vibe and budget.
I’ve personally visited all five spots and picked them not just for their charm, but because they’re actually easy to book last-minute.
So let’s quit the overplanning and ditch the overwhelm. Planning these beautiful Europe weekend trip ideas will feel like a vacation, not a second job.
Romantic River Cruise in Budapest – The Perfect Long Weekend Getaway
- Why it’s dreamy: Budapest combines old-world grandeur with spa culture, cosy cafes and one of Europe’s most scenic rivers. If you’re craving a quick European break, this hits the spot! Explore Fisherman’s Bastion and Buda Castle, slip into one of its thermal spas like Gellert and grab a drink at the famous Ruin Bars. A Danube cruise at sunset? Pure magic, and probably my favourite experience from what was one of my favourite long weekend getaways in Europe.
- Perfect for: Couples, solo travellers and anyone looking for romance on a budget.
- Where to stay: For my trip, I stayed at Hotel Clark Budapest—the views of the Danube were unreal, and it’s adults-only, so it felt extra peaceful and romantic. If you’re more budget-minded, Maverick Central Market is right in the middle of everything and super comfy.
- How to get there: Direct flights from most major European cities—plus it’s a great hub if you’re inter-railing.
- Extra Tip: Book a nighttime Danube river cruise for jaw-dropping views of the Parliament lit up in gold. Many also include a welcome drink or unlimited Prosecco and live music.
The cruise I took included drinks, and I absolutely loved it. Book your seat before tickets sell out.
Wine-Drinking in Porto – Best European City For A Long Weekend With Friends
- Why it’s dreamy: Charming cobblestone streets, pastel buildings and riverside cafés – Porto is every bit as delicious as its famous wine. It’s cosy, colourful and made for long, slow weekends. Catch a vintage tram, visit the stunning blue and white porcelain-fronted churches and follow in my footsteps by climbing Porto Bridge for stunning views (and enjoy a little treat at the top!).
- Perfect for: Foodies, wine lovers and relaxed travellers – solo, couples or friends.
- Where to stay: Staying at The House Ribeira in the heart of the old town made my weekend in Porto feel effortless. Views, wine and walkability – it was everything I needed. If you’re on a tighter budget, Gallery Hostel has a fun, artsy vibe and the friendliest staff.
- How to get there: Direct flights from many European hubs or a scenic train from Lisbon.
- Extra Tip: Book a vintage EV tour of the city to see the best sights without hurting your feet. I absolutely loved this experience when I visited Porto!
Fairytale Stroll Through Stockholm – A Fantasy Europe Weekend Trip Idea
- Why it’s dreamy: Stockholm feels like a living storybook. Think pastel-coloured facades, cosy fika cafés and archipelago views from medieval streets in Gamla Stan. I loved taking in the view from Katarina Elevator (it’s free!), discovering beautiful art in the city’s subways, people watching at City Hall and wandering the pretty old town streets in the late afternoon sun.
- Perfect for: Solo travellers, photography lovers and anyone craving culture and calm.
- Where to stay: I splurged (just a little!) on Hotel Rival, which is owned by one of the ABBA members and it felt like staying in a Scandinavian dream. For something more informal, City Backpackers Hostel is social, clean and super central.
- How to get there: Easy direct flights across Europe or a scenic ferry if you’re already in the Nordics. We reached Stockholm by overnight ferry from Helsinki, and continued onwards to Tromso by overnight train.
- Extra Tip: Get the Stockholm Pass if you plan to visit museums or hop on a canal tour – it pays for itself fast.
Grab your Stockholm Pass now, it gives entry to more than 50 attractions and tours for between one to five days.
Coastal Vibes in Dubrovnik – Best Long Weekend Getaway For Multi-Country Travels
- Why it’s dreamy: Dramatic cliffside views, terracotta rooftops and crystal-clear Adriatic waters. Dubrovnik is pure Mediterranean magic, especially when the summer crowds thin out. I spent one of my long weekend getaways in Europe there, and loved wandering the old town and city walls, riding the cable car and feeling the sand between my toes on the beach. From Dubrovnik, you can also join a day trip and visit Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro, so it’s ideal if – like me – you love your multiple-country trips.
- Perfect for: Couples, sun-seekers and Game of Thrones fans (hello, King’s Landing!).
- Where to stay: I went solo and stayed at Old Town Hostel, which is right in the heart of the walled city and super convenient. If I were to go again with friends, Villa Paulina would be my dream – with a luxury sun terrace and hot tub, it would be absolutely worth it.
- How to get there: Seasonal budget flights or you can catch a quick ferry from Split.
- Extra Tip: Walk the City Walls at golden hour – you’ll get uninterrupted sea views and less foot traffic than mid-day.
Book this walking tour to learn more about the city’s vibrant history, and why TV shows have made it so popular with visitors.
Gothic Magic in Kraków – Best European City For A Long Weekend Of History
- Why it’s dreamy: Kraków’s old town is straight out of a fantasy novel – I loved the gothic towers, market squares, candlelit pubs and historic magic that was at every turn. I also found that it’s the best value of these five cities, with food, drink and transport in Kraków all being much more affordable there. So it’s the perfect choice if want a cheap weekend getaway in Europe or you’re on a tighter budget.
- Perfect for: History buffs, digital nomads and cosy winter travellers. It also has a fantastic traditional Christmas market every December that’s worth a trip.
- Where to stay: Staying at PURO Kraków Kazimierz gave me the perfect mix of comfort and character. For something more social and budget-conscious, Let’s Rock Hostel is a solid pick, right near the action.
- How to get there: Kraków is well-connected by train or flights, especially from Central and Eastern Europe.
- Extra Tip: Visit the Wieliczka Salt Mines for an underground adventure that’s more magical than it sounds.
Grab your Salt Mines ticket ASAP to avoid disappointment.
