Extreme Christmas Market Day Trips: Five Festive Itineraries
Have you ever looked at flight prices and realised you could visit a European Christmas market for less than a night out at home? Thatโs the magic of the Christmas market day trip.
โExtreme day trippingโ involves going to another country and returning home within one day, as defined by Iglu Cruise.
The trend has exploded recently. In fact, Google data shows searches are up 9900% from October 2023 to October 2025. And honestly, itโs not hard to see why. With early flights, efficient trains, and Europe decked out in fairy lights, you can enjoy a full festive day abroad and still sleep in your own bed that night.
Iโve done many of these whirlwind trips myself. Theyโre fast-paced, fun, and full of festive spirit. And theyโre ideal for anyone short on annual leave or budget but big on Christmas cheer.
In this guide, Iโll share five easy Europe Christmas market itinerary plans you can do in a single day, plus my personal tips to make it all run smoothly.
Why Choose a Christmas Market Day Trip?
Letโs be honest. Time off work is precious. Most of us canโt take a week off every time wanderlust hits. But with a Christmas market day trip, you donโt need to.
A Christmas market day trip means youโll save money on hotels, use minimal annual leave, and get that satisfying โI did something exciting with my weekendโ feeling.
And the bonus? Youโll see Europe at its most magical. Think glowing lights, warm waffles, and mulled wine in hand.
When I first tried it, I flew to Geneva on a 6am flight from Manchester and caught a train to Montreux. I was eating cheese fondue overlooking the lake and Alps by lunchtime and back home before midnight. Was I tired? Yes. But also buzzing with festive joy.
Here are five cities Iglu Cruise recommends for an extreme day trip this festive season. Experience the magic of Christmas around Europe without incurring the cost of hotel stays, or eating into your annual leave.
For each destination thereโs a suggested itinerary that combines Christmas festivities with cultural experiences, covering morning, afternoon and evening activities before the return home. Plus the flight or train time from London.
Lille, France
- Average Eurostar journey: 1 hour 22 mins
- Christmas market dates: 20th November to 29th December 2025
Lille is the perfect starter for first-time extreme day trippers. The Eurostar whisks you straight to its charming old town.
Hereโs how to spend a festive day in Lille:
Morning: Grab a croissant at a local boulangerie and wander the cobbled streets to the Palais des Beaux-Arts. This place is stunning inside and out, and you can see works by Donatello as well as many other impressive paintings and sculptures.
Afternoon: Christmas shopping is brilliant in Lille. I loved browsing the boutiques for gifts before tucking into beef-in-beer stew at a cosy estaminet. Donโt miss Maison Mรฉertโs vanilla waffles because believe me, theyโre legendary. If youโre travelling solo, join a dessert tour of Lille to sample more of the sweet treats on offer here.
Early evening: Head to Grand Place for Lilleโs Christmas market, complete with giant Ferris wheel and huge tree. I went for one quick mulled wine but stayed for two hours! Make sure you also soak up the sparkling lights at the Christmas Village in Place Rihour, and shop at its 90 wooden chalets.
Top tip: The Lille 24-Hour City Pass gets you free travel around the city as well as free access to the Palais des Beaux-Arts and many other sites.
Cologne, Germany
- Average flight time: 1 hour 20 mins
- Christmas market dates: 17th November to 23rd December 2025
Cologne at Christmas feels like stepping into a snow globe with its huge Cathedral and pastel-coloured buildings.
Hereโs how to make the most of your yuletide-inspired one day in Cologne:
Morning: Start at Museum Ludwig for modern art and pop culture, then pop into the Fragrance Museum, which was the birthplace of Eau de Cologne. Or, if youโre feeling energetic, climb the 533 steps to the top of the Cathedral. I found this exhausting, but the view was worth the effort!
Afternoon: Wander through Ehrenfeld, known for street art and vintage shops. I spent ages people-watching in a cafรฉ with a light Kรถlsch beer (itโs served endlessly until you cover your glass with a coaster!). Hit the IceBar and marvel at frozen sculptures of Cologneโs famous landmarks while enjoying a cocktail or two, then hop on board a festive winter cruise along the River Seine, complete with Christmas music.
Early evening: The Heinzels Christmas Market is one of Europeโs best. Ice skate beneath fairy lights, then finish at the KรถlnTriangle for views of the cathedral glowing in gold.
Top tip: Grab a KรถlnCard for free public transport and discounts on local museums, tours, restaurants and shopping.
Basel, Switzerland
- Average flight time: 1 hour 40 mins
- Christmas market dates: 27th November to 23rd December 2025
Basel mixes old-world charm with Swiss precision. Everything here runs on time, even the mulled wine queue.
Hereโs my suggested itinerary for a Christmas market day trip to Basel:
Morning: Visit the Tinguely Fountain and explore the Magische Hรถfe. These magical courtyards glow with Christmas decorations.
Afternoon: Take a ferry along the Rhine to see the lights reflecting off the water. Stop at Barfรผsserplatz Market for the cityโs famous gingerbread, and take a Swiss cheese tasting experience to understand the culture and indulge in some dairy delights.
Early evening: Catch a free Advent show at Basel Theatre, then climb St Martinโs Tower for views across the twinkling Old Town.
Top tip: Join this Christmas Magic guided walking tour to find the cityโs most festive spots, and learn more about local advent customs and other holiday facts.
Edinburgh, Scotland
- Average flight time: 1 hour 15 mins
- Christmas market dates: 15th November 2025 to 4th January 2026
Not all festive day trips require leaving the UK! And Edinburghโs market rivals any in Europe. Plus, you’ll avoid those long Europe Entry-Exit System (EES) queues.
Hereโs the perfect Christmas market itinerary for a Scottish pre-yuletide trip:
Morning: Fuel up with a haggis breakfast bap on Cockburn Street, youโll need the energy for your busy day! Then start your city tour at the base of Arthurโs Seat. This is absolutely worth the walk up for sweeping city views.
Afternoon: Time your visit or guided tour of Edinburgh Castle with the one-oโclock gun, then enjoy lunch at The Dome, which actually looks like Christmas exploded inside!
Early evening: Make your way over to East Princes Street Gardens to ride the Star Flyer and swing 80m above the market, or brave the Polar Ice Bar for a drink in an icy wonderland. When I went, I felt like my eyelashes were frosting over, yet I loved it!
Top tip: Reach Arthurโs Seat by taking Edinburghโs city sightseeing hop-on hop-off bus. Youโll also be able to see other popular locations on the route, without tiring out your legs.
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
- Average flight time: 1 hour 10 mins
- Christmas market dates: 15th November 2025 to 5th January 2026
Every December, Amsterdam turns into a glowing maze of canals and Christmas lights. You have to be there to really appreciate it.
Hereโs your step-by-step mini guide to a festive day in the Netherlands:
Morning: Cycle or stroll along the Jordaan district before visiting the Van Gogh Museum, where you can see hundreds of famous paintings, drawings, and letters by the Dutch master himself.
Afternoon: Then head over to the Winter Paradise RAI festival, the largest winter event in the Netherlands. This is like an explosion in a Christmas factory, with indoor and outdoor ice rinks and Ferris wheels.
Early evening: The Amsterdam Light Festival is just magical. I did the evening canal cruise by heated boat and honestly couldnโt stop smiling. All the bridges, boats, and buildings were all glowing in colour. End your day with a Dutch stew-filled snack (bitterballen) before heading to the airport.
Top tip: If you have time, donโt miss the A’DAM Lookout to marvel at panoramic views of Amsterdam. This ticket includes admission and a drink, and you can add additional experiences including the adrenaline-inducing Over the Edge Swing.
Bonus Itinerary: Bruges, Belgium
- Travel time: 1 hr 10 min flight to Brussels + 1 hr train, or 3 hours 25 mins via Eurostar
- Christmas market dates: 21st November 2025 to 4th January 2026
If you can spare two days for some pre-Christmas travel, Bruges is absolutely worth it. It looks like a storybook scene, and makes for a dream Christmas market day trip.
Day 1: Climb the iconic Belfry Tower. Trust me, this is a challenging but rewarding climb up 366 narrow winding steps, but the panoramic views are breathtaking.
Then visit the Main Square Christmas Market and indulge in a hot chocolate with large chunk of chocolate you stir into the hot milk yourself. Hit the floating ice rink for a skating session, followed by a drink at the โIJsgloedโ Winter Barโ next door.
In the evening, start your enchanting journey through the 3.5 km Light Experience Trail where youโll experience 10 magical light installations in an immersive experience that celebrates the art of light.
Day 2: Visit De Witte Pelikaan, a speciality Christmas shop that sells decorations throughout the year, and then stop by the cityโs most photographed spot, Rosary Quay. Here you can see the picturesque buildings that line the canal as well as Hotel De Castillion, beautifully decorated to resemble a huge Christmas Tree.
After lunch, explore the process of Belgian chocolate-making and sample some treats at the Choco-Story Chocolate Museum. If you still have room, the Old Chocolate House is well-known for serving the best hot chocolate in the district.
To round off your evening, stop at Brasserie Cambrinus to sample its extensive beer menu and enjoy delicious Flemish dishes like traditional beef stew cooked in dark beer. Follow that with a canal cruise to see the stunning reflection of Christmas lights on the water.
Top tip: Get the 72-hour Musea Brugge Card for free entry to museums and sights, including the Belfry, Groeninge Museum, City Hall, and the Church of Our Lady.
