aloSIM Review: No More Airport eSIM Nightmares (+ 10% Off)

Ever bought an eSIM and landed at your destination only to find you can’t install, activate or get connected easily? Yep, I have!

That’s why I wanted to share my honest aloSIM review – because using it has solved those exact same frustrations for me.

In this eSIM review and comparison, I’ll break down how it’s helped me stay connected during my non EU country travels, and I’ve even got a cheeky discount to help you save on your next trip.

aloSIM is an eSIM that works alongside your physical SIM card. It takes over the data roaming so you can get online without going through your normal network provider.

Many travellers do this because their network provider either doesn’t include data roaming in the country they’re travelling to, or does but at a largely inflated cost. Failing to check this can leave you facing a HUGE bill.

It’s ideal for anyone travelling outside the EU, where many providers don’t offer coverage. Plus you can opt for a single country eSIM or a multiple country package version – ideal if you’re likely to be crossing borders during your trip.

aloSIM is stored in your phone’s SIM profile settings, making it easy to switch between different network providers. You can store multiple, and delete them when used.

Having tried several eSIMs on the market, aloSIM is definitely the easiest I’ve found to to use. Which is the primary reason why I’m writing this aloSIM review. Because I’ve had a full-on tantrum in the middle of an airport arrivals hall while struggling to set up an eSIM, and I don’t want you to experience that too!

The best way to start is to download the aloSIM app to your phone and create a user profile. Then purchase the eSIM that suits your travel plans on the app. Complete these initial steps before you travel, ideally, to save time.

To use aloSIM after landing at your destination, simply follow these instructions to connect automatically:

1. With a good WiFi connection, select the eSIM and click ‘Install’.
2. Your phone will ask you to choose a default SIM for data – choose the aloSIM
3. If you’re asked to choose a default line for calls and messages, choose your primary SIM – it’s often listed alongside your phone number.
4. Label your aloSIM if asked. I usually name mine as the country or area it covers.

And that’s it! It takes just a minute or two. Every eSIM review promises that, I know, but it’s true here.

If you’re not sure if you’ll get a steady WiFi connection, you can follow the above steps before you travel. But don’t choose the aloSIM as the default SIM for data yet. You’ll need to update your settings and do that when you arrive at your destination. To do this on an iPhone, simply go to ‘settings’, ‘mobile service’, ‘mobile data’ and click the aloSIM you renamed earlier, and do this again to revert back to your physical SIM when you arrive home.

Previously, with other eSIMs, I’ve spent ages trying to activate them or get online after my flight landed, even if I set it up in advance, and it wasted so much valuable time. If you’re on a short trip, the last thing you want to be doing is messing with your phone or searching for a local SIM card store when you could be sightseeing or sipping a cocktail by the sea.

With aloSIM, you can search by country or region (or select from the list) to find the right package for your destination.

If you’re visiting a single country within 30 days, then you can go ahead and buy a SIM that covers that country only.

But if you’re crossing borders, or have multiple trips coming up in that period, it may be better value for money to purchase a regional SIM that covers them all.

Then there’s size – yes, size matters here! You can buy as little as 1GB right up to unlimited, and for between 7 and 180 days. So planning ahead could help you decide.

For reference, I bought a 3GB eSIM for my 24-hour trip to Belgrade, and used it as much as I wanted to. I updated my Instagram stories frequently, browsed social media, read news stories, used Google maps a lot and sent WhatsApp messages to my friends and boyfriend to my heart’s content. I used 1.6GB.

So as part of my aloSIM review I’d personally recommend buying 1GB per day, if you use your phone an average amount and have WiFi at your accommodation. Remember, you can track your use and top-up if needed, making it the best eSIM for weekend travel.

Using aloSIM while travelling has been so easy, especially compared with other eSIMs I’ve tried. I won’t name and shame them in my aloSIM review, but believe me when I say this – just stick with this one!

I simply buy my SIM before I travel and have it ready to use in the app. Then when my flight lands, I connect to the airport WiFi and click to install it. You can even do this part before you fly, if you want to, and just switch data roaming in your phone’s settings when you land. If you can’t get airport WiFi, or it isn’t strong enough, ask at a cafe – usually they’ll allow you to connect if you ask politely.

I recently used aloSIM when I landed in Serbia, and it took just two minutes and a couple of clicks to install and activate. I was online before I’d even reached passport control.

I’ve also used it without issue while travelling through countryside from Albania into North Macedonia, and between Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina. I expected some dropout while crossing the borders, but there wasn’t one.

The other thing I like about aloSIM is that it’s really easy to see how much data you have remaining on each SIM at a quick glance on the app. And it’s easy to buy additional data if you need to – you can simply top up the existing eSIM so you don’t have to install a new one.

Finally, the big advantage for me, is that the app has built in 24-hour live chat support. So if you ever have any issue, you can get the help you need to sort it quickly any time of day or night. Although I haven’t needed to do that yet because I haven’t run into any issues!

Another benefit of using aloSIM that I haven’t covered in this eSIM review yet is exceptional data coverage. Even while travelling across country borders and through rural areas of the Balkans, I’ve always been able to use my phone throughout the journey. And that’s really reassuring when I’m travelling solo and relying on my phone to provide information, company and safety.

And the speed has also been great, I can’t remember ever getting impatient because a page wasn’t loading fast enough, or because a call dropped out.

As with every product and service that sounds awesome, there is a catch. And it wouldn’t be right for me to not mention it as part of a full and honest aloSIM review.

Not every phone is eSIM compatible, especially older or non smart phones. And if you’re tied into a combined phone and service contract your phone may be locked to your current network provider. So you won’t be able to install an eSIM.

Before purchasing, check your device is eSIM compatible and check with your network provider to ensure your phone is unlocked and able to switch network hosts.

That’s really the only restriction. There are no credit checks or contracts, you simply pre-pay for the package you want and that’s it, you’re good to go.

And you don’t have to be tech-savvy, because it’s so simple to install and the app offers full instructions and live chat support if needed. If you buy an aloSIM then find you’re not able to use it, for whatever reason, they’ll refund you in full.

Even though aloSIM covers over 200+ countries and regions, I still managed to find one it didn’t cover – Monaco.

This tiny country situated on the south coast of France isn’t included in my usual network provider’s data roaming allowance. But aloSIM doesn’t offer coverage there either, sadly, not even using its Europe eSIM.

As I only visited Monaco for a few hours, I managed fine with WiFi as and when needed. Plus I was able to pick up a signal from France in some areas closer to the border.

Moral of the story, check the full list of countries included in a regional eSIM before travelling, and don’t just assume you’ll get data there.

Longer version: Definitely! It’s the easiest to use (of the eSIMs I’ve tried), the prices are competitive, it offers speedy, stable data coverage and there’s support on hand if you need it.
