Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club Review: Worth The Cost?
I arrived at Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club in Nanyuki, in the foothills of Mount Kenya, with the kind of brain fog that only a long working week can produce. Ten minutes later, I was standing on the lawn, staring up at the mountain like it had personally turned up to reset my nervous system.
Then the second โwowโ landed. Animals! Just casually wandering. Not in a โtheme parkโ way, more like the grounds were their meeting point and we were their guests.
This Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club review is based on my own stay, and itโs the honest version: what you actually get for the money, what felt properly special, and whatโs likely to cost extra. If you work full-time and want a high-impact, low-stress break in this luxury accommodation, this place is basically a cheat code.
First impressions and setting: luxury with Mount Kenya views and wildlife on the lawn
The expansive grounds of this heritage hotel feel huge and offer stunning views of Mount Kenya, but not in a cold, corporate resort way. Itโs green, calm, and oddly soothing, like someone turned the volume down on the whole world. The main buildings have that classic โold-school safariโ look established by William Holden, and the grounds are the star of the show.
Within the first day, Iโd already had those tiny, ridiculous moments that make you grin at your phone like, โNo one at work will believe this.โ We watched birds and baboons feeding with their babies from the Cafรฉ Bar patio. Peacocks strutted around like they paid for the place. We spotted llamas (yes, llamas!) and monkeys around the grounds, just doing their thing.
If youโre planning a quick escape for a birthday, an anniversary, or a โwe survived the yearโ trip, the vibe fits. Couples and families love it, and itโs also great if you want luxury without having to organise every second.
For a sense of what the hotel offers (and to double-check the latest packages), the official page is handy: Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club.
Getting around the estate: golf buggies, gardens, and the โpinch meโ scenery
The golf buggies are not just cute. Theyโre genuinely useful, because the grounds are big and youโll want to be out early and back late without trekking in the dark.
In real life, it worked like this: you call, they come, you hop in, and suddenly youโre gliding past lawns, flowers, and Mount Kenya sitting in the background like a screensaver. Waiting times were reasonable during my stay, and the staff kept it easy, friendly, and un-rushed.
My favourite places to sit were the terrace and the lawns near the main areas, mainly because you can people-watch and animal-watch at once, which is elite holiday multitasking.
Two practical tips that made the stay better:
- Pack a light layer for evenings. It cools down fast near Mount Kenya – you’re close to the equator, but at higher altitude than Nairobi
- Watch sunset on the patio at least once. Itโs free, itโs stunning, and it makes you feel like the main character

Wildlife and animals on the hotel grounds: baboons, birds, peacocks, llamas, and monkeys
The wildlife moments here donโt require a long drive or a 5 am alarm. They just happen.
The Cafรฉ Bar patio was my prime spot for this. Watching birds and baboons feeding nearby while I had a drink felt almost illegal, like Iโd hacked the system. Add peacocks wandering past, plus monkeys popping up in the trees and climbing down from your apartment roof, and it turns into a constant โwow, look over there!โ situation.
And then the beautiful llamas, which I did not have on my Kenya bingo card!
A sensible note, without turning into your mum: keep your distance, donโt feed anything, and donโt try to get the perfect selfie if it means getting too close. The magic is in seeing wildlife behaving naturally, not in testing your luck.

Rooms and service that make it feel worth the price: fires lit for you and birthday-level attention
A luxury stay is only worth the price if it removes effort. This one does.
Yes, the setting is gorgeous, but it is the service that looks after you that makes it feel like a proper break. The service has that calm confidence that lets your brain switch off and the hospitality shines through in every detail.
One quick reality check: room types vary, and your experience will match what you book, whether a deluxe queen room or Riverside Suite. If you care about being near the restaurants or having certain features, be sure to confirm it upfront.
If you want a wider spread of guest experiences before booking, I found it useful to skim a mix of reviews on Booking.comโs Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club review page.
The room comfort extras I didnโt know I needed: fireplaces and hot water bottles for cosy nights
The hotel’s turndown service deserves its own fan club, and I’d happily be the founder!
Both evenings we came back and the staff had lit the fireplace in our room, and placed hot water bottles in the bed. I cannot overstate how comforting that is after a busy day out in the fresh air, and when the temperatures have dropped. It is the kind of detail that turns a nice room into a โcancel my emails foreverโ room.
If you are booking, here is what I would check or request:
- A room with a stone fireplace (our standard deluxe room included this)
- The view you actually want (garden views are beautiful, but Mount Kenya views are the headline act)
- Location, if you prefer being closer to dining and the main areas
This is perfect for travellers who want comfort without planning. The whole point is you should not have to work hard to relax. And at Fairmont Mount Kenya, you really don’t.
Staff who actually listen: Maria and Joshua, and the little touches that land
This is where my stay went from โlovelyโ to โIโll remember this for yearsโ.
It was my boyfriendโs birthday on the second day of our stay and our customer care co-ordinator Maria helped me to organise every detail in advance. I didnโt have to chase, remind, or micromanage, she had it all sorted. I could just enjoy being there.
We came back to a bed decorated with flowers, plus cake with a personalised message. These little surprises were thoughtful, not flashy, and hit exactly right.
Maria and Joshua also helped us organise having our luggage couriered back to Nairobi by road, checking on their location throughout the process. And they distributed the donations we’d brought for a local school (sanitary, medical, and school supplies). Soon after our visit, the hotel staff helped host the young pupils at the property for a visit, with Santa giving out some of our gifts and the rest stocking the classrooms. Watching that day unfold through photos Maria sent to me via WhatsApp was quietly emotional, in the best way.

For a short trip, that level of care matters because it reduces the mental load and warms the heart. When you have only got a weekend there, as we did, you donโt want to spend it coordinating logistics.

Food, activities, and the real value: whatโs included, what costs extra, and what we loved most
Hereโs the part that changes the value maths. Youโre not paying only for a bed and a view. Youโre paying for a stay where a lot of the โholiday joyโ is right there on-site and happens naturally.
During my stay, the huge buffet breakfast and dinners were included in the price at Tusks Restaurant, and that makes a real difference. Meals can quietly blow up a weekend budget, especially in luxury spots.
Activities are a mix. Some are easy, on-site fun, and others are paid safari experiences you book in. The hotel has its own huge conservancy, where you can enjoy safari game drives and other excursions all within its own grounds.
The buffet is the main event: huge breakfasts, dinners included, and my top picks
The breakfast buffet was the sort that makes you sit back and laugh, because how is there this much choice before 10 am? And will anyone judge me for eating donuts for breakfast (or do I care)?
It had a strong mix of local and international options, hot and cold, and it felt so generous, not like a sad tray of lukewarm eggs. The breakfast buffet being so substantial also meant evenings stayed relaxed with dinner also included. No hunting for restaurants, no surprise bill that makes you mentally convert currencies while pretending youโre fine.
One of the most memorable moments was breakfast with the mountain bongos. Yes, actual mountain bongos. This was an additional fee of about ยฃ130 for two people, but it was so worth it to feel like we’d stepped into a nature documentary, except while holding a coffee and trying to act normal about it.
We feasted on a huge spread of fruit, yoghurts, pastries, pancakes and cooked breakfast, all prepared by our private chef and served to our picnic table. Then we got to watch endangered bongos and cheeky warthogs feeding nearby, which was just amazing.
Simple dining tips that helped:
- Go early for buffet meals if you want first pick and a calmer dining room
- Tell them your dietary needs or table preference, the staff were super helpful
- For a low-stress schedule, plan activities around meal times
What we did on-site: maze, heated pool, spa massage, and a private Island Deck dinner
If your ideal break includes doing things like a champagne breakfast, but not spending hours in a vehicle, youโll be very happy here.
We did the maze, which was light, silly fun in the best way – even though my boyfriend ran off and left me lost, which he thought was hilarious! Itโs the kind of activity that makes you laugh and forget you ever owned an inbox.
We also swam in the heated pool with views of Mount Kenya, then did the very advanced holiday sport of relaxing in the grounds. That view does not get old, even if you check it every ten minutes like itโs going to disappear.
The spa was another highlight. My boyfriend had a neck, shoulder and back massage, and it fixed his stiff travel feeling instantly. If it feels like you spend your life at a desk, this is money well spent. It was really reasonably priced too, at about ยฃ45 for a massage and spa stay lasting two hours.
Then there was our private Island Deck dinner, which was genuinely special. It felt intimate and calm, with that โis this real?โ atmosphere, especially as the light changed around the water. The twinkling lights and coal fire heater kept it light and warm.
If youโre booking the Island Deck experience, ask about:
- Timing (golden hour is your friend)
- Dietary preferences (so it feels personal)
- A weather plan (because nature doesnโt check your itinerary)
At ยฃ150 per couple, this was a bit of a splurge. But it’s the ideal treat for birthdays, proposals, anniversaries, or just two people who want to celebrate making it to their holiday.
Animal orphanage and horse riding safari: the experiences youโll talk about back at your desk
Two experiences gave me the strongest โI canโt believe we did thatโ feeling.
First, the Animal Orphanage visit. We saw a rhino, tortoises, leopards, lions and a lion cub, buffalo, and a giraffe. It was the kind of outing that sticks in your head, because youโre not just ticking a box, youโre actually seeing these animals up close at the Animal Orphanage and learning whatโs involved in care and protection through their conservation projects, including critically endangered species. Tickets are included in the price of your stay.
Second, we did a horseback riding safari, and it was brilliant. Moving through the landscape on horseback felt calm and cinematic, alongside options like game drives. We also saw antelope roaming close to the golf course, which is one of those sentences that sounds made up until youโve lived it. This cost about ยฃ83 for us both for a one-hour ride.
Practical notes thatโll save you hassle:
- Book popular slots early, especially on weekends
- Wear closed shoes, and bring sun cream
- Be upfront about your horse riding experience (or lack of!) and listen to the guides – itโs not the day to freestyle

Is Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club worth the price tag: who should book and who should skip
Prices move around a lot depending on dates and deals. When I checked around mid 2025, I saw some resident-rate offers in the tens of thousands of Kenyan Shillings per night, while higher-end packages can go much higher when activities and premium inclusions are bundled. The best move is to price your exact dates and compare whatโs included.
This exclusive mountain retreat is perhaps expensive by Kenya standards, but the value shows up in the setting, the included dining, and how easy it is to have a full trip without running yourself ragged. Even if you didn’t add paid-for activities, a stay here is full of amazing experiences and represents great value.
For another long-form read on the experience, Luxurious Magazineโs review is worth a look.
Quick decision guide: best for couples, birthdays, and short luxury breaks, skip if you want bargain pricing
Best for: couples who want nature with comfort, birthday trips, special occasions, and full-time workers who need maximum reset in minimal time.
Maybe not for: travellers chasing bargain rates, or anyone who wants a non-stop safari schedule with long game drives every day.
My sweet spot stay length is 2 to 3 nights. Arrive the first night, settle in, watch the sunset and enjoy a buffet dinner. Day two take one or two “big” activities (bongos breakfast, animal orphanage or horse riding), then enjoy spa and pool time. And on your last day, have a slow breakfast, last wander of the grounds and head off to your next destination.
We visited at the start of our 7-day Kenya itinerary, and it was the perfect introduction to our African adventure.
FAQ: Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club review basics people always ask
Where is Fairmont Mount Kenya and how do you get there from Nairobi?
Itโs in Nanyuki, near Mount Kenya National Park, uniquely positioned near the equator for experiences like the equator ceremony spanning the northern and southern hemispheres. Most people travel by road from Nairobi (we booked a transfer with a sightseeing stop at the equator marker with Daytrip), or fly into the region for a transfer close to Mount Kenya National Park. Check out my full blog post on the transport options for this journey.
Whatโs included in the rate?
In my experience, the big win was that buffet breakfast and dinner were included, which made the stay feel better value. Always confirm your exact board basis when booking.
Are activities included or extra?
Some things are simply there to enjoy (grounds, views, pool time, the maze and animal orphanage), while experiences like the spa, special meals, and guided activities such as horse riding are often extra. Check the current menu of activities in your room on arrival, or contact the hotel in advance for the latest price list.
Is the animal orphanage worth it, and what animals can you see?
Yes, it was one of my top highlights, and tickets are included as part of your stay so a visit it a must. We saw a rhino, tortoises, leopards, lions and a lion cub, buffalo, and a giraffe, among others.
Is it good for a birthday or special occasion?
Absolutely. The staff planned my boyfriendโs birthday surprises in advance through Maria, including bed flowers and a cake with a personalised message, at no extra cost. It took the stress out of organising. Added experiences like Breakfast with the Bongos and the Island Deck Dining made the whole day like a dream you don’t want to wake up from.
Whatโs the turndown service like?
Cosy perfection. Staff lit the fireplace in our room each evening and put hot water bottles in the bed, which felt amazing after a cool evening. They can also spray the room to repel mosquitoes, on request.
Is it safe to walk around with wildlife on site?
Yes, the animals mostly aren’t bothered by people walking past, but use common sense. We saw baboons, birds, monkeys, and peacocks around shared areas. Keep your distance, donโt feed animals, and follow staff advice.
What should you pack for the climate at the base of Mount Kenya?
Light layers. Days can be warm, evenings can be cool. Bring a jumper or light jacket, plus sun cream and comfortable shoes for walking the grounds. Check out my full Kenya packing list to make sure you bring exactly what you need.
What’s included in the rooms?
Our room was fully equipped with a fridge, tea and coffee-making accessories, iron and ironing board, hairdryer, safe and UK-style plug points. We also had a desk for working and arm chairs for relaxing. Everything we needed for our stay was at hand.
What’s there to see near to Fairmont Mount Kenya?
As well as the animal orphanage and Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, a short drive takes you to Ol Pejeta Conversancy, home to the worldโs last northern white rhinos. There’s also Mount Kenya, Africaโs second-highest peak, which can be climbed as part of a longer excursion. Nanyuki town is close by, and don’t miss a sightseeing opportunity by stopping at the equator marker for a photo and souvenir.
What’s the best way to book?
We booked our stay through booking.com for a great price, flexible rate and buyer protection. Check out rates for your stay on the Fairmont Mount Kenya page here.
In my Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club review, I can honestly say this mountain retreat felt worth the price tag, because it stacked all the good stuff in one place. Wildlife moments on the lawn, big buffet meals included, and the exemplary service genuinely made life easier. And it wasn’t so expensive – I’ve paid as much to stay and eat in low to mid budget Swiss hotels.
My highlights were views of Mount Kenya, breakfast with the mountain bongos, the neck, shoulder and back massage, the private Island Deck dinner, the animal orphanage visit, the horse riding safari, and switching off by the heated pool. But even without the paid-for added extras, this place is still amazing and well worth a stay.
Add the turndown service with the fireplace and hot water bottles, plus Maria and Joshua making a birthday and school donation logistics run smoothly, and this becomes the kind of trip that amazes and resets you.
If you want a short luxury break that feels much longer, book your dates below, ask about a fireplace room, and pre-book the experiences youโll regret missing if you don’t.
