What to Pack for Kenya: Full Safari, Beach & City Checklist
Youโve finally booked that bucket-list Kenya trip. A couple of safari days, a slice of Indian Ocean heaven, a cheeky city stay in Nairobi, all squeezed between limited annual leave from a very full-on full-time job.
Then you open your suitcase, stare at your clothes and think: what to pack for Kenya? I mean, how on earth do you pack for rhinos, room service and reef fish and look good at the same time?
This guide is for that exact panic. My own route was two nights at the foot of Mount Kenya, two nights at a beach resort in Watamu, then two nights in Nairobi city. Our long-haul flights allowed a 23 kg checked case, cabin bag and personal item. Internal flights? A very strict 15 kg soft bag total.
To make it work, I used a soft duffel for essentials, then couriered the rest of our luggage by road. It was weirdly life-changing!
This is the Kenya packing list I actually used, not a Pinterest fantasy. Itโs ADHD-friendly, great for those short on time and split into simple sections: quick overview, core packing list, safari, beach, city, a 6-day sample packing plan and a short FAQ. Plus there’s a handy PDF checklist for those list lovers. No faff, just things that earned their suitcase space.
Quick Kenya Packing Overview: Luggage Limits, Weather & Dress Codes
Before we get into the detail, hereโs the context that shapes the whole list.
Long-haul airlines from the UK often give you around 23 kg checked, plus a cabin bag and personal item. Internal flights in Kenya often cap you at about 15 kg total, in a soft bag. Thatโs why my hard suitcase did the big journey, but my soft bag did the small planes.
For weather, think variety. Around Mount Kenya, early morning game drives feel chilly, then youโre peeling off layers by 10 am. Watamu on the coast is hot and humid, with strong sun that ignores your SPF hopes and dreams. Nairobi sits in the middle, like a warm spring day that still needs a light layer at night. For seasonal detail, I like this simple guide on the best time to visit Kenya for safari.
Dress code is simple:
- Safari: neutral colours, no bright white, comfy layers.
- Cities: modest-ish, shoulders and knees roughly covered, nothing that screams โIโm wearing my club dress in a bankโ.
- Coast: beachwear is fine at resorts, but cover up a bit in town.
It all sounds like a lot, but most items can earn their place in more than one setting. And if you choose coordinating colours, you can mix and match more outfits from the same key pieces.
Understanding Kenya Flight Luggage Allowances
On our international flights we had:
- 23 kg checked case
- Cabin-sized bag
- Personal item (small backpack or tote)
On internal flights, luggage was capped at 15 kg total, in a soft-sided bag. My solution:
- Pack everything into the hard suitcase for the UK to Kenya legs
- For the internal hop, move only essentials for two days in Watamu into a 15 kg soft duffel
- Send the main suitcases by road with Wells Fargo (we paid about ยฃ18 for two large suitcases), and have them delivered to your hotel for the remainder of your trip
To stay under limits, I weighed bags at home and took a cheap travel luggage scale, used packing cubes to keep outfits together, and put heavy tech (laptop, camera lenses) into my carry-on within airline rules.
If you want more detail on getting to safari lodges from Nairobi, my full Nairobi to Nanyuki transport options guide pairs nicely with this packing list.
Kenya Weather & How It Affects What You Wear
Kenya sits near the equator, so the sun is strong even when youโre cold in a jeep.
- Mount Kenya / Nanyuki: cool mornings and nights, warm days. Youโll want leggings or trousers, a T-shirt, a light jumper and a jacket at 6 am, then fewer layers by midday.
- Watamu / Malindi coast: hot, humid, plenty of sea breeze. Light, breathable fabrics, quick-dry swimwear and serious sun protection.
- Nairobi: mild, often spring-like. Dresses, jeans or light trousers, and a jacket for evenings.
There are two main rainy seasons in many parts of Kenya, roughly March to May and October to December. A tiny packable poncho and quick-dry clothing are better than bulky coats. The goal is layers you can peel off, not a suitcase full of giant jumpers.
Core Kenya Packing List: Essentials For Any Safari, Beach & City Trip
This is your master checklist. If itโs in this section, it probably travels with you for the whole route.
Travel Documents, Money & Bags You Must Not Forget
The non-negotiables:
- Passport and ETAs or visas printed and saved on your phone. I applied via the official Kenya eTA website.
- Travel insurance details and emergency contacts, printed and digital.
- Booking confirmations for hotels, transfers and internal flights.
- USD and Kenyan shillings (KES) cash. I used USD for some hotel extras, KES for tips, markets and snacks.
- At least one debit or credit card that works abroad. I use Monzo to spend internationally without fees. Join Monzo using my link and and get up to ยฃ100 free!
I kept photos of every document in cloud storage, plus a screenshot on my phone for offline days. Bag-wise, I used:
- A large-sized hard suitcase for long-haul
- One soft duffel bag that worked for internal flights
- A foldable tote bag for shopping and beach days
- Small anti-theft cross-body day bag for cities.
I also packed these bluetooth bag tracking devices in the suitcases. With long-haul flights plus internal courier transfers, it was so reassuring to be able to check their location in real-time.
For extra first-time visit context, my detailed Kenya tips for firstโtime travellers post is a good companion to this checklist.
Tech & Gadgets: Cameras, Plugs & Power On The Go
Hereโs what I actually took:
- DSLR camera, lenses, spare batteries, charger and camera bag
- Binoculars – high Power, 12×42 roof prism
- Laptop and charger
- Kindle or book
- Universal travel plug adaptor, UK plugs and all cables
- Power bank (this compact power bank worked hard every single day)
- Metal water bottle
- Small fan for stuffy rooms and hot days
- Bluetooth connector and headphones for flights

You absolutely donโt need every bit of this, but it helps to see the full spread. I kept all fragile or expensive tech in hand luggage, wrapped in clothing inside a padded camera bag. Plus, battery-powered devices must always go in hand luggage (always check individual airline rules). A small cable pouch saved me from the classic โwhy is my phone on 2% with 18 random cables and none of them fitโ scene.
Toiletries, Sun Protection & Bite Protection That Actually Help
I ran a two-tier system: full-size in the checked case, mini versions in a 100ml clear bag for flights and day trips.
Core toiletries:
- Face cream, shampoo, conditioner, body wash.
- Deodorant.
- Razor, nail file, cotton buds.
- Toothbrush (I used this electric toothbrush, which holds charge for a month)
- Make-up and remover pads
Sun and skin:
- Full-size high SPF sun cream, plus a mini for day bags. I used a high SPF sunscreen like this and still got slightly pink, so donโt skimp
- After sun, full-size and mini
- Lip balm with SPF
- Hand gel and pocket tissues
Bite protection and care:
- Mini diffuser and citronella oil for hotel rooms
- Citronella mosquito bracelet for wrists and ankles
- Mosquito wipes and spray
- Plug-in insect repellent for bedside use
- Bite cream and antihistamines
The full-size kit lived in the suitcase. The minis plus wipes, hand gel and tissues rotated between my day bag, safari backpack and beach bag.
Medications, Vitamins & First Aid For Peace Of Mind
This section is for the anxious brains. I see you.
I packed:
- Personal prescription medication in original boxes with labels
- Painkillers
- Antihistamines
- Diarrhoea tablets and Imodium
- Rehydration sachets
- Blister plasters and normal plasters
- A couple of vitamins I actually take at home
All of this went into a small first aid pouch in my main bag, with a mini version (just a few bits) in my daypack for game drives and day trips.
Before travel, I spoke to a nurse about vaccines and malaria tablets and used a clinic like Superdrugโs travel health service for jabs and anti-malarials. I kept a note of every medicine name and dosage in my phone, in case I lost anything.
Sleep, Flight & Comfort Gear For Long Travel Days
Long-haul you is not the same as normal you. Normal you can cope. Long-haul you needs a neck pillow.
My tiny flight kit lived in my personal item:
- Sleep mask
- Neck pillow with memory foam cushioning
- Compression socks – in the correct size
- Bluetooth connector for plane screens and wired or wireless headphones
- Soft, comfortable layers and a change of underwear
- Cosy outer layer like a hoodie or pashmina
- Boiled sweets in a tin
Using compression socks and an eye mask meant I actually slept on the way out, so I wasnโt a zombie on the first day. I grabbed this little pouch as soon as I sat down, then shoved my cabin bag in the overhead without drama.
What to Pack for a Kenya Safari: Clothes, Shoes & Gear
This is what I wore while staying at Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club, where mornings felt like autumn and midday felt like July.
Safari Clothing: Neutral Layers For Early Mornings & Hot Afternoons
My safari colour palette was beige, khaki and cream, with a few muted greens. Actual items:
- T-shirts, shirts and simple tops
- Lightweight trousers and leggings
- A couple of pairs of shorts for warmer daytime
- Long-sleeved dresses for evenings
- One light jacket and one pashmina for early drives and nights
On a typical 6 am game drive, I wore light trousers, a T-shirt, an overshirt and a light jacket. By 10 am Iโd stuffed the jumper and jacket under my seat. Cotton and linen were perfect, and they handled dust well.
For a 5 to 7 day safari, 3 to 4 tops, 2 pairs of trousers, 1 pair of shorts and 2 dresses was plenty once I started mixing and matching.
Shoes & Accessories: Safari Boots, Socks & Sun Safety
For shoes I packed:
- One pair of comfy safari boots
- Boot socks and normal socks
- Flat sandals
- One pair of heeled sandals for dinners
- Trainers to travel in
Closed shoes are handy for dusty tracks, bug bites and walking around lodges. Sandals are ideal for the pool, beach and city. I stuffed socks inside my boots in the suitcase to save space and kept one spare pair in my safari bag for chilly morning drives.
Accessories that really mattered:
- Wide-brimmed sun hat – safari style!
- Sunglasses
- Simple hair brush, clip and my beloved heatless curling set for low-effort waves
Safari Gear: Cameras, Binoculars & Little Extras That Upgrade Game Drives
Game drives are where your tech choices show up. What I actually used most:
- Camera with one main lens, plus a zoom for wildlife
- Spare batteries and memory cards
- Binoculars for spotting rhinos, distant giraffes and birds
- Small backpack with my metal water bottle, mini first aid kit, hand gel, tissues and a snack
What to Pack for the Kenyan Coast: Beach Days in Watamu
Arriving at Twiga Beach Resort with only a 15 kg soft bag felt amazing. No โdragging a suitcase through sandโ energy, just the exact things I used.
Beach Clothes: Swimwear, Cover-Ups & Easy Day-to-Night Outfits
For 2 full beach days, I packed:
- 2 swimsuits
- 1 sarong that doubled as cover-up, scarf and shoulder cover in town
- 1 short-sleeved dress for daytime
- 1 light long-sleeved dress for evenings
- 1 pair of shorts and 2 light tops
- 1 light jacket or pashmina for breezy nights
Everything was breathable and quick-dry, because humidity laughs at heavy fabrics. The same long dresses also worked in Nairobi with different shoes.
Beach Footwear & Accessories: Sandals, Sun Hat & Salt-Safe Gear
My Watamu footwear was simple:
- Flat sandals for almost everything
- Heeled sandals only for nicer dinners
Jewellery-wise, I packed a few light pieces in a small jewellery case and wore the same simple set most days. No one needs to be digging for earrings in a sand dune. A foldable beach bag or my foldie bag carried towels, water and books.
Beach / Excursion Day Essentials: Sun Cream, After Sun & Anti-Mosquito Tricks
The coast sun felt spicier than Nairobi. In my beach / excursion bag I kept:
- Full-size sun cream and a mini bottle for top-ups
- After sun
- Diffuser and citronella oil for the room where allowed
- Mosquito bracelet and wipes
- Hand gel, tissues and SPF lip balm
- A dry bag or strong zip bag for my phone and camera on boat trips
- 360 camera for fun underwater shots
I was so glad Iโd gone for full-size sun cream rather than relying on the hotel shop.
What to Pack for Nairobi & Kenyan Cities: Smart, Comfortable & Respectful
Broadwalk Residency in Nairobi was our โcivilisationโ stop: good food, errands, a bit of shopping and rooftop views.
City Outfits: Casual-Smart Looks for Nairobi Days & Nights
Rather than a whole new wardrobe, I reused safari and beach pieces in new combos:
- Daytime: shorts or trousers with a nice top, or a casual dress that covered shoulders
- Evenings: long-sleeved dresses, sandals or heeled sandals, light jacket
Think โcity casualโ rather than โclub nightโ. Layers help with air-con in malls and cooler evenings on rooftops.
Daypacks, Safety & Little Extras for City Exploring
For Nairobi days out I carried:
- Small anti-theft cross-body bag
- Foldie bag for last-minute supermarket runs and souvenir shopping
- Metal water bottle
- Hand gel and tissues
- Mini first aid kit
- Power bank and headphones for longer Uber rides
I kept only what I needed on me, left flashy jewellery at home and used bag trackers in my checked luggage. My foldable bag saved me when I realised, 3 hours before the airport, that Iโd definitely bought more Kenyan tea and snacks than planned.
Sample 6-Day Packing Plan: How I Used a 23 kg Case & 15 kg Soft Bag
Hereโs how the theory played out on my actual 6-day route.
What Stayed in the Main Suitcase vs What Went in the Soft Bag
For the small-plane part of the trip, my 15 kg soft bag to Watamu held:
- Outfits for 2 days of beach, excursions and 1 travel day
- 2 swimsuits and a sarong
- One pair of sandals
- Light jacket and pashmina
- Mini toiletries kit, make-up and essential skincare
- All medication and a small first aid kit
- Camera gear, laptop, Kindle and chargers

In the big suitcase, which was couriered onwards to Nairobi, I left:
- Extra dresses and outfits
- Heavy shoes like safari boots once safari was done
- Full-size toiletries and spare sun cream
- Extra gadgets and non-essentials
When we landed in Nairobi again, our suitcases were already waiting at our hotel, which felt like some sort of travel magic.
A Realistic Outfit & Gear Count For 6 Days in Kenya
Hereโs roughly what I packed for 6 days of safari, beach and city:
| Item | Quantity |
|---|---|
| T-shirts / shirts / tops | 5 |
| Trousers / leggings | 2 |
| Shorts | 2 |
| Dresses (short & long) | 4 |
| Swimsuits | 2 |
| Safari boots | 1 pair |
| Sandals | 2 pairs |
| Light jacket | 1 |
| Pashmina | 1 |
| Underwear | 7โ8 sets |
| Socks (incl. boot socks) | 6 pairs |
I stuck to a neutral palette with a few accent colours so everything mixed. I also organised an outfit for each day and packed these into separate packing cubes. On sleepy 5.30 am mornings, getting dressed was so easy, basically โgrab today’s cubeโ.
Packing Donations For Kenya School Pupils
If you have extra or spare luggage allowance, as we did on our outbound flight, consider bringing some much-needed school essentials for local, disadvantaged pupils.
We asked a local charity what was most needed, and added the items to an Amazon gift list for friends and family to help us purchase. We ended up filling two bags with exercise books, reading books, stationery, scientific calculators, sanitary protection and medical supplies.

Then, thanks to staff members at Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club, these were distributed to children and their teachers at a local school. Ask your hotel or airline if they participate in a similar charitable scheme, like Pack For A Purpose.
Kenya Packing FAQ: Your Top Questions Answered
Do I really need neutral clothes for a Kenya safari?
You donโt have to, but soft colours like beige, khaki, cream and olive work better. They blend into the bush, pick up less dust and donโt attract insects as much as bright shades. I did pack one bold top and wore it in Nairobi instead of on game drives.
How many outfits should I pack for a 1-week Kenya trip?
Iโd aim for 4 to 5 mix-and-match outfits, 2 to 3 dresses, 2 swimsuits and 1 or 2 spare T-shirts. Re-wear trousers and layers, especially for safari, and use hotel laundry if you really need to. For my 6 days, I easily re-wore pieces and still felt like I had choice.
What should I wear on the plane to Kenya?
I wore soft jogger trousers, a T-shirt, a light jumper and a zip hoodie, plus compression socks. Plus my trainers so they didnโt eat suitcase space. The same outfit worked for the return journey, which meant one less clothing decision.
How do I handle insect bites and mosquitoes in Kenya?
My mosquito defence squad was insect repellent spray or wipes, Avon Skin So Soft, a citronella bracelet, a plug-in repellent like this one, bite cream and antihistamines. I used both prevention and treatment and it made a huge difference. Always talk to a doctor about malaria tablets and sleep under nets where theyโre provided.
Can I buy toiletries and clothes in Kenya if I forget something?
Yes. Nairobi and many tourist areas have supermarkets and malls with toiletries, basic clothes and some outdoor gear. I still prefer to pack my favourite sun cream, skincare and medicine, then treat Kenya shopping as a backup, not the whole plan. If you forget one thing, donโt panic, youโll still have a brilliant trip.
Pack Smarter – Kenya Packing Checklist PDF
You donโt need a suitcase that weighs as much as a small elephant to enjoy Kenya. You just need smart layers, solid sun and bite protection and a few hard-working favourites that move from safari truck to beach lounger to city rooftop.
Use this checklist as a base, then tune it to your style and number of days. Planning my packing in advance meant I could actually relax into sunrise game drives, lazy pool time and Nairobi dinners instead of worrying about forgotten chargers or missing socks.
Save or print this list, then ask yourself one last question: โWhat can I remove?โ Your bag will be lighter, your brain will feel clearer and youโll glide under those luggage limits with zero drama.
