Getting To Bratislava

Trains between Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest are frequent and affordable, making this the perfect day trip from these other nearby European cities.

Flights

Getting to Bratislava from the UK is straightforward. There are direct flights from several major cities, including London, Manchester, and Edinburgh. Ryanair and Wizz Air offer frequent, budget-friendly flights directly to Bratislava Airport (BTS). Then it’s only about 9 km from the city center. Compare flight dates and prices on Skyscanner. The airport is well-connected by public transport. And there’s a regular bus service that can take you downtown in roughly 20 minutes for just a few euros. Alternatively, for more convenience, you can opt for a taxi or a rideshare, which typically costs around €20-€25.

Many travelers also choose to fly into Vienna International Airport (VIE), which is about an hour away from Bratislava by car or public transport. Because this airport offers more frequent flights and additional airline route options.

Train/Bus

Bratislava is also highly accessible by train from nearby European capitals. So if you’re coming from Vienna, the train journey is just 1 hour, with tickets costing around €11. Trains depart frequently throughout the day. Train tickets can be bought and used easily using Omnio. And buses are even cheaper, at around €5-€10. Indeed this makes Vienna a popular gateway to Bratislava for a day trip or overnight stay. And it’s a convenient stop for travelers arriving from further afield.

From Budapest, the trip takes around 2.5 hours by train, with tickets ranging from €15-€20. Buy using Omnio for convenient digital train tickets. Alternatively, there are also buses that run frequently, often at lower fares. Similarly, both routes offer scenic views and comfort, with frequent services for an easy short visit.

Tours

You can also visit by taking an organised day trip tour, including this Get Your Guide day cruise by boat from Vienna.

Alternatively, join a half day road trip by mini van.

I visited Bratislava for a day after spending 24 hours in Vienna. Then we travelled by train to Budapest for a further two nights as part of a European city-hop trip. Surprisingly the combination of flights in and out of the different airports with train travel in between was more affordable. And travelling this route meant we got a taste of three new cities and countries in one.
