Why A Krakow Christmas Market Trip is a Must-Do for Travel Photographers
Krakow is Poland’s cultural gem. Notably it’s known for its picturesque architecture, cobbled streets, and vibrant atmosphere. Every corner of the city offers a stunning backdrop, perfect for travel photography.
Additionally, the city’s rich history and charming old town create a magical setting, especially during the festive season. It really is the perfect spot for unique, eye-catching content.
Krakow’s Christmas Market History
Kraków’s Christmas Market dates back to the early 14th century, making it one of Europe’s oldest. Subsequently, it reflects a rich tradition of festive trade and craftsmanship.
Over the centuries, merchants gathered in the square to sell handmade goods, wool, and local delicacies during the holiday season. Its enduring popularity stems from the city’s deep-rooted Catholic traditions and a love for Christmas celebrations.
The Market Today
Today, the emphasis remains on showcasing traditional Polish crafts and culture. Subsequently, you’ll find stalls selling handmade ceramics, baked goods, jewellery, metalwork and much more.
And like other Polish cities, it’s very affordable to eat, drink and stay in Krakow compared to visiting comparably large cities in the UK and Europe. And a Krakow Christmas Market trip is no exception. So it’s no wonder that so many friends, couples, families and even solo travellers (like myself on this occasion) jet off to spend a day or two there.
Top Photogenic Spots To See On Your Krakow Christmas Market Trip
When the famous Krakow Christmas Market comes to life in December, it transforms the old town into an enchanting wonderland. Consequently, as I found, this makes for endless opportunities for breathtaking festive photos.
Here are some pointers to inspire your Yuletide pics.
1. Rynek Główny (Main Square) – the Heart of Your Krakow Christmas Market Trip
The main square, Rynek Główny, is Europe’s largest medieval square and so, of course, hosts one of Europe’s most beautiful Christmas markets.
The traditional wooden stalls, handmade crafts and twinkling fairy lights provide a magical atmosphere and ample photo opportunities.
The iconic Cloth Hall is also a must-see location on your Krakow Christmas Market Trip, with even more stalls inside and along the front.
Photography tip:
Time your Krakow Christmas Market trip for dusk to capture the warm glow of the lights against the winter sky. With this in mind, you might even be lucky enough to see a picturesque sunset.
Cost:
A Krakow Christmas Market trip is free, as there’s no charge for admission. Later I’ll be talking more about the market’s food, drink and gift prices, so keep reading!
2. St. Mary’s Basilica
This Gothic masterpiece and towering twin spires make for a stunning backdrop for your Krakow Christmas Market trip.
Significantly, St. Mary’s Basilica, or Kościół Mariacki, is one of Kraków’s most iconic landmarks. Built in the 14th century, it stands proudly in Rynek Główny, showcasing a stunning Gothic design. Furthermore, the interior boasts a magnificent wooden altarpiece carved by Veit Stoss, considered the largest Gothic altarpiece in the world.
Time your visit carefully and you’ll catch the trumpeter that plays from the tallest tower every hour, adding to the festive feel. When this trumpet call – Hejnal Mariacki – is heard, it’s to commemorate a 13th-century trumpeter who warned the city of a Mongol invasion.
Photography tip:
Stand near the market stalls to frame the basilica with festive decorations.
Cost:
Basilica admission costs €5 / $5.50 / £4.50
3. The Horse-Drawn Carriages
Line up near the Cloth Hall to photograph the ornate carriages decked out for Christmas.
As can be seen, these carriages add a touch of old-world charm to your Krakow Christmas Market trip’s festive spirit.
Photography tip:
Use a low angle to capture the horses and the market lights in the background.
Cost:
Carriage rides cost around €40 / $43 / £35 for a 30-minute ride.
Tips For Your Krakow Christmas Market Trip
To help you get the most of out of your visit, I’ve detailed my own top tips for enjoying Krakow’s Christmas Market. Of course, these are based on my own personal experience, having visited in December 2024.
1. Wrap up warm!
Krakow can be very cold in December, with average temperatures ranging between minus two and three degrees Celsius during the day and colder still after sunset.
Snowfall is also common, so I’d definitely recommend warm layers when packing for your Krakow Christmas Market trip. Particularly a hat or ear muffs, gloves, scarf, warm coat and thick socks and boots. You can find my favourites in my Amazon storefront.
If you need warm accessories, you have plenty of choice at the market. I particularly loved the hand-knit mittens and the warm alpaca socks with festive patterns. Particularly the socks were a bargain at 25 PLN (€6 / $6 / £5).
For your photo aesthetics, plan your outfit to match the Christmas colours. In this situation, think caramels, reds and cream colours for those picture-perfect photos.
2. Protect your belongings
Krakow generally has a low crime rate and is considered safe for visitors. However, distracted tourists in busy locations – such as Krakow Christmas Market or on public transport – are easy pickings for thieves.
Use a bag that can be secured (my favourite is my Pacsafe crossbody bag), and ensure your valuables are locked away out of reach at all times.
3. Take a tote bag for your Krakow Christmas Market trip shopping
On your Krakow Christmas Market trip you’ll find lots of beautiful gifts. In fact, it’s the perfect place to tick off some of your Christmas buying list, or simply treat yourself!
My favourite stalls were those selling ceramics, gingerbread hearts and Christmas ornaments. Undeniably, I could not resist taking home a beautiful ceramic Christmas tree or intricate bauble.
Most sellers, I found, used paper bags for sales with not a plastic carrier bag in sight. So be sure to pack a lightweight reusable tote bag to carry your shopping. Also, don’t forget to leave room in your luggage for any purchases!
4. Krakow Christmas Market trip food and drink options
There are many options for eating and drinking during your Krakow Christmas Market trip. With as many food stalls as gift stalls, selling everything from traditional dumplings to mulled wine, there’s something for everyone. The churros were delicious and the best I’ve had in a while!
Here are some traditional Polish favourites:
Pierogi (Polish Dumplings)
Available with fillings like potato, cheese, or sauerkraut and mushroom.
• Price: 15 PLN (€3.25 / $3.50 / £2.80)
Bigos (Hunter’s Stew)
A hearty dish of cabbage, sauerkraut, and various meats.
• Price: 18 PLN (€3.90 / $4.20 / £3.30)
Grzaniec (Mulled Wine)
A must-try, spiced hot wine served in festive cups. Without a doubt, my favourite was the raspberry flavour, with cherry a close second!
• Price: 12 PLN (€2.60 / $2.80 / £2.20)
5. Cash vs card for your Krakow Christmas Market trip
I always find it handy to carry some Euros in cash, especially if shopping at smaller independent stalls such as those at Krakow Christmas Market.
However, in Poland the currency is the Zloty, not the Euro. So my Euros were no use here!
Though I did find that most stall holders were able and happy to accept card. Only a few asked for cash only.
If you want to take cash, I recommend exchanging either in the UK or in Krakow. You’ll get a worse rate at the airport, and you’ll likely be charged by the ATM provider if you make a cash machine withdrawal there.
Most important, for card transactions make sure you use a debit card that’s fee-free for spending abroad. I always use Monzo to avoid charges and get a good exchange rate. And always pay in Zloty, not your own currency, if the machine gives the option. This will work out cheaper.
Other must-see sights near to your Krakow Christmas Market trip
During your Krakow Christmas Market trip, it’s worth checking out some of the other sights the city has to offer.
Here’s my pick of the best nearby sightseeing spots to enjoy during your stay.
1. Rynek Underground Museum
For this sight, you don’t have to stray very far off your Krakow Christmas Market trip map.
Surprisingly, beneath Rynek Główny lies the Rynek Underground Museum, offering a glimpse into Kraków’s medieval past. The museum showcases excavated streets, market stalls, and artefacts from the city’s early days.
Interactive displays and holograms bring history to life, making it an engaging experience for all ages. It’s a fascinating way to explore Kraków’s history from beneath the surface while staying right in the heart of the city.
St. Florian’s Gate
St Florian’s Gate, known locally as Brama Floriańska, is one of Kraków’s most iconic medieval landmarks. Following its completion in the 14th century, it served as the main entrance to the city and part of Kraków’s defensive walls.
Standing 34 metres tall, it is the only remaining original city gate, showcasing Gothic architecture. Later, it was topped with a Baroque-style spire added in the 17th century.
Historically, the gate protected Kraków from invasions and was the starting point of the Royal Route, leading directly to Wawel Castle. Presently it’s a popular tourist attraction and vibrant place for street artists who display and sell their artwork along the adjacent walls.
Visitors can climb the tower to explore the small museum inside and enjoy views of the surrounding area. At the same time, guided tours are also available to discover more of the gate’s secrets.
Kazimierz (Jewish Quarter)
Kazimierz is a historic district known for its rich Jewish heritage. Established in the 14th century, it became a hub of Jewish life in Kraków until World War II.
Today, it is a vibrant area filled with synagogues, such as the Old Synagogue, and eclectic cafés. The district is also home to Plac Nowy, a bustling square known for its street food stalls.
Kazimierz has experienced a revival, particularly after being featured in the film Schindler’s List. Visitors can walk the cobbled streets, admire the restored buildings, and enjoy the unique blend of Polish and Jewish culture. With this in mind, consider joining a walking tour to learn more about the area’s history from a local expert.
More Festive Events and Activities to enjoy during your Krakow Christmas Market trip
While enjoying your Krakow Christmas Market trip, check out some of Krakow’s other festive events. For example, the Christmas Crib (Szopka) Competition, held in early December, showcases intricate nativity scenes crafted by local artisans.
You’ll also find ice skating rinks scattered around the city, perfect for a fun wintery activity and Instagram shot.
Furthermore, Krakow’s festive atmosphere extends to its many cosy cafés, where you can warm up with a hot drink or traditional Polish treats.
The city’s population of around 780,000 ensures a Krakow Christmas Market trip remains lively but not overwhelming during the holiday season.
Flight Options For Your Krakow Christmas Market trip
From the UK and across Europe, Krakow is served by budget airlines including Ryanair. Flights depart from most major airports including London, Manchester and Leeds Bradford and can be booked for as little as £30 on selective dates.
My return flight cost £49 from Leeds Bradford (LBA) to John Paul II International Airport (KRK) and was booked about three weeks beforehand. The earlier flights tend to be the cheapest, and of course weekends and school holidays will always be priced much higher.
Use Skyscanner and select ‘whole month’ to find the cheapest flights from your nearest airport.
Airport Transport Options For Your Krakow Christmas Market Trip
Krakow’s John Paul II International Airport (KRK) is about 15 km from the city centre. There are typically 3 convenient ways of transportation.
Train:
- The airport train is the fastest option, taking around 20 minutes to reach the main
Kraków Główny station. From the arrivals hall, the train station isn’t well signposted. But you’ll find it by going up the escalator, turn left, walk along the bridge and head down the stairs. A one-way ticket costs approximately 13 PLN / €4 / $4.50 / £3.50, and you can either buy at the machine or simply scan the QR code to buy a digital ticket.
Bus:
- Public buses (lines 208, 252 or 902) cost 6 PLN / €1 / $1.10 / £0.90 and take around 40 minutes. The bus stops at Kraków MDA (the main bus station), and from there it’s a 10-minute walk to the market. Tickets can be bought from the machines inside the airport, and must be validated on board.
Taxi:
- A taxi ride takes about 25 minutes. If you hail a cab outside the airport this will cost around 105 PNL / €24 / $27 / £21. However, I used a Bolt taxi between the airport and Krakow centre and it worked out at only 35 PLN / €8 / $9 / £7. That’s a huge saving both ways. So definitely download the Bolt app and sign up if you don’t already have it (this link gets you a discount on your first ride). A taxi will get you the closest to Krakow Christmas Market, so is ideal for those with accessibility needs.
Private transfer:
- Alternatively, you can arrange a private transfer for the fastest, most convenient and most comfortable mode of transport into Krakow. Day Trip provides a transfer service with added sightseeing stops included, so are worth checking out for a special occasion.
